I read a report that Herman is supposedly waiting to see if UH hires either of Applewhite or Orlando as HC before he offers them a coordinator position. Now, we all know he’ll be talking to them in the mean time but how long can he really wait before making a firm offer to one or both?
What other sexy coordinators are out there that he risks loosing if he’s stuck for a couple of weeks in a holding pattern?
Related comment. I think if UH hires Applewhite as HC then Orlando is gone to UT the next day or sooner. If UH hires Orlando as HC I’m not sure if Applewhite will be gone that quick or at all.
After watching CTO’s presser, I felt a bit of animosity from him towards TH. He may not have been forward with his emotions but his emphasis on improving the UH brand and finishing what they started for the seniors makes me feel that he thinks TH let everyone down. It may also explain why he understands the importance of securing our committed recruits. He exlpained in detail that the end result does not matter, he wants the kids to know he gave 100% and I believe he knows TH didn’t give 100% at the end of the season.
It’s as if he now has a chip on his shoulders and wants to say “I learned what I needed to learn from TH, now give me a chance to lead this team.”
You raise a good point. There are a number of people (me included) who think if CTO doesn’t get the HC job, he will go to Texas as DC. If that’s true, he’s in quite a pickle here trying to salvage recruits. I can’t say I detected animosity in his presser, but he went out of his way to establish what he’s doing here is for the kids. That, in itself, is at least an indirect jab at TH.
I seem to remember that Snake Oil Salesman requested a three year commitment from CTO as DC and CMA as OC so as to keep the group together and bring continuity for a period of time and see what happens once a couple classes of recruits are in the system.
If I’m CTO and I made that commitment to SOS and then said a$$hat bolts, I’d be a bit pissed and would want to show those recruits and my employer that I am a man of my word and am in this to win it.
TH’s mistake will be thinking he can replicate what he did here in Austin. He’s been exposed and it is a completely different culture. That includes bringing in all his ‘guys’. He should start with a new staff. I know a lot of them have TU ties, but the ‘ra-ra’ works with the underdogs, not those who think they’re entitled
UT has USC the third game of the season in LA. By then they will have played (and probably beaten) Maryland and San Jose State and the media will have declared them to be “back.” I’m hoping USC beats UT by 30 and the boosters start grumbling and complaining about hiring an unproven coach.
He’s young and inexperienced and doesn’t have the network that most head coaches have. Letting go of all the assistants that were in place kind of shows that as there were a couple of guys that probably could have helped him out.
Sumlin was the same way as he pulled a lot of our coaches with him to A&M. I expect our ex-coach to have the same kind of success (at most) that Sumlin has had. You just know that Bob Stoops can’t wait to get back at him on the field.
