The Baltimore Colts originated from the remnants of the failed Dallas Texans NFL franchise, which was purchased by Carroll Rosenbloom and relocated to Baltimore in January 1953. The team adopted the name, colors, and branding of the earlier AAFC/NFL Baltimore Colts (1947–1950) to honor the city’s horse racing heritage.

Key details regarding the origin of the Colts include:
Previous Iteration (1947–1950): A separate Baltimore Colts team existed first in the All-America Football Conference (AAFC) and briefly in the NFL before disbanding due to financial issues.
The 1953 Revival: After the Dallas Texans folded after only one season (1952), NFL Commissioner Bert Bell urged Baltimore to secure a new franchise.
“Bring Back the Colts” Campaign: Baltimore business leaders and fans sold 15,000 season tickets in just over four weeks to prove viability.
Looked it up. Dallas had 2 different teams called The Texans.
The original folded in 1952 and its Assets were sold to Baltimore.
In 1960 The AFL was created and The Dallas Texans were an original member. Second team in Dallas to have that name. After 1962 they moved to KC and were renamed The Chiefs.
When I was a kid, was a big Dallas Cowboys fan, as most folks were/are down in the RGV. Roger Staubach was THE hero.
Many years later living in Houston I was taking my Mom to Hobby to put her on a plane back home.
Since she was elderly, SWA let me wheel chair her to her gate. The SWA plane she was to board came in from Dallas
The plane is unloading and out comes Captain Comeback Roger. Someone stopped him and asked, hey are you Roger? Folks around are in awe and start gathering around. He was kind enough to stop and chat with fans. I shook his hand. Great guy.
Couldn’t help but notice his stature…maybe 6 ft at most. I would have expected 6-5 or so.
Geezer: I stand corrected. My wife an I flew up on the Alumni flight a repossed Russian passenger plane (really the signs were all in Russian). Shasta (the real one) was on the plane. Waiting in the airport the announcers were announcing the score in disbelief. Big crowd at Hobby when we got back. One of the most memorable days of my life.
