I Know UH Is Not Poor, But

UH is not where it needs to be to compete annually for a national title. JD’s post serves as a reminder.

My brain can’t process how UH would have performed last year with A.J. Dybantsa on the team.

Hard to know how we would have fit. He played hero ball a lot.

Our issue last season wasn’t talent level. Not that AJ isn’t on another level.

“But” what?

Every other school in the country that was not BYU did not have the cash to spend on him either….

And remind me….how did BYU finish?

It’s not only about getting talent but getting the talent that wants to be coached, learn and buy in to the culture.

If only we weren’t stuck with a starting 5 consisting of 3 players drafted into the NBA including a lottery pick, another starting guard that has a 2-way contract with the Celtics and a starting center that WILL be drafted next season…

Sucks being so poor!

I’ll also remind you that UH JUST PLAYED FOR A NATTY!!!

We compete for a natty annually because we are one of the best PROGRAMS in the country and not simply because of NIL.

We just had two first round picks for the first time in forever. What are you talking about? Lol

Out of 365 D-1 basketball teams last season, we only finished in the top 16 (top 4.38%). The horror! :open_mouth:

Yeah… but… we’ve only done that 7 times in a row…

They out spent us for him and still went 0-2 v UH.

No doubt AJ was the best player in the country last year, but I agree I don’t think he would have won a title for us last year. We needed a nasty center to give us rebounding and scoring around the basket.
Obviously AJ was a great player and I am sure coach would have used him as a forward, but I think he was too much like Cenac at a higher level…but hey we came with two first round picks, something UH has only done three times in school history…

I think it’s 4 now Butch…

So you are saying how great we could be if only we could buy an all star team each season.
Yeah!

Yeah. Forgot about Sasser and Walker. I was going back to the 80s. Lol

We as fans need to understand that the outspending-the-competition model will NEVER be successful long term here. What we can expect is middle-of-the road resources that are carefully managed so that we regularly have elite results.

Occasionally, we my put all our chips in when we feel like it is strategic. This is IMO what happened year before last when we played for the natty, and left us uncharacteristically young, albeit talented, this past season.

AJ reportedly made $7m last season, NO ONE has that money to spent on an entire roster, heck BYU could not field a competitive team around him. A.J. Dybantsa is not an example.

BYU had a couple of crucial injuries to starters last year, too… before those injuries they were legit contenders.

Good catch!
