What’s your favorite ice cream flavors & brands?
As a child it was lemon custard.
A Dairy Queen vanilla dipped cone
Vanilla, cookies and cream, and mint chocolate chip are my favs.
My favorite brand is mostly about nostalgia and no longer available. We always had ice cream from the Schwan man growing up. It was the best.
Blue Bell is always a win. But I’m not an ice cream snob. It’s all pretty great. ![]()
me too. From Baskin-Robins, i always got the double cone with 3 scoops. Of course back then it was pretty cheap, today that’d probably cost over $10. My parents would take us after church on sundays to break our fast, usually the one that used to be on Stella Link or rice village. Good times. Another fave from childhood, the original dreamsicle and the fudge bomb. For some reason, today’s version just isn’t the same.
German chocolate cake ice cream from baskin robins. Comes out once a year.
My cardiologist does not approve.

HEB carried Intense Vanilla a few years ago, then apparently discontinued it. It consisted of vanilla with white chocolate chips. So far, my letter-writing campaign has yielded nothing but a court order to stay away from the corporate offices.
Yasso yogurt bars.
I like a good butter pecan, but also, back in the day, Schwann’s delivered an awesome cherry ice cream with whole cherries blended in with chunks of chocolate in the mix.
The lemon custard that I first remember eating was in the late 1950’s at a place called Rettig’s Ice Cream in the Heights. If I recall correctly, they had several locations in Houston and were later bought out by Borden’s. [I grew up in Oak Forest just off of Ella Blvd., just north of Waltrip H.S.]
When we go into Baskin-Robbins the correct answer is every single flavor.
If there’s a licorice-flavored ice cream, count me out.
Vanilla from my hand crank ice cream freezer. Alas, the wood rotted, and I now cheat with my electric model.
I worked at the A & P on Ella from 62-66 across from WHS while in HS thru soph year at UH. My favorite flavor is Bluebonnet Homemade Vanilla except the holidays years when they bring back peppermint bark.

Hey GeezerMike - I certainly remember the old A & P store. My older brother graduated from Waltrip in 1964 and I graduated from there in 1969. We lived on DuBarry Lane, the first residential street after you cross Judiway.
If we’re talking shops in addition to store brands, milk + sugar on Westheimer is fantastic. Cannot recommend strongly enough.
My beloved and I received an electric one when we were married. I pull it out now and then (the ice cream maker, I mean) to make peppermint vanilla. When the batch is finished, I throw in some beers in the sloshy ice for later.
