Idea... Orlando HC, Applewhite OC, Charlie Strong DC

Hear me out…

Promote Todd Orlando to HC.

Give Applewhite a raise and title of OC/co-HC. He can’t go with Herman to UT because of the whole banging a student trainer incident. So he could stay at UH, and we could keep the players he recruited. Perfect for continuity.

Since Orlando would be the HC, and we know the HC usually doesn’t call his own plays… he’s going to have to hire a new DC. Go get Charlie Strong for DC.

It would be a coup… hell, maybe we could even flip a recruit or two from UT.

I know some people are going to say that UT defense was bad this year, but I can give you numerous scenarios were a HC wasn’t a very good HC, but was a helluvagood coordinator… Wade Phillips is a perfect example. When Charlie was a coordinator at Florida, he won the Broyles Award… he was THE MAN as a DC.

It’s unlikely to happen… but it would definitely create HEADLINES.

I’m just not totally sold on Applewhite as the OC. I just felt like his play calling was subpar and inconsistent at times. I think the clock management with 19 seconds was a prime example. I thought there has to be a plan for a “hail mary” scenario. Note, we had the same scenario against Navy and we looked ill prepared then and did not try to fix it within the same season.

Why not Strong for HC?

Charlie will get HC offers; no reason for him to be a DC.

And Knute Rockne as back up asst HC and Bud Wilkerson as asst D.C.

Hey except for Opie the rest belong in the cemetery too

Sorry 2000 just pulling your leg … still can’t stop laughing after the Meekins choice

I’m sure Strong will be offered some head coaching positions elsewhere. I also think our offense was not good enough to retain Applewhite, little alone giving him a raise.

Whoever the new head coach is, hopefully Orlando, he should be able to hire an offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator he is comfortable with.

Also whoever the new head coach is, needs to be four years with a sizable buyout that goes down each year. We need a coach that is willing to put his commitment down on paper and not just voice his commitment.

Not totally sold on Orlando next yr. Smu, Navy, and Memphis was some of the worst defense. It was on Orlando’s watch too.

The Memphis game was one quarter and we know why they were playing like that. The Navy game we were missing our top two starters on defense AND the offense and special teams virtually gave up 19 of the points. Navy had under 400 yards against us and averaged over 500 yards the rest of the season.

Our defense wasn’t the problem against Navy even with the injuries. More than half of Navy’s points came off of a short field.

I don’t want to help UT get off the hook for Strong’s buyout.

I never said Meekins as the choice. I just asked about thoughts. He has been a proven head coach with a 114-27 record. However, I wouldn’t expect anything less than you being extremely critical of others on here.

Go for Montgomery. Enough of this “three yards and a cloud of dust” offense. And Applewhite…no way. Everyone in the stadium knew he would run up the middle on first and second down, then put us in 3rd and long. Horrible playcalling.

Charlie Strong will be a head coach again or a DC at a p5. Remember, this guy was DC at Florida under Urban Meyer. I think we need to take our time with this hire. Not a crazy amount of time, because it always matters with recruiting. However, we have a really good thing going and I’m not ready to digress from all of our progress. Ideally we need someone who won’t use us as a stepping stone, but until we are p5 will that ever happen?

We just move on. Interview a bunch of people. Make an offer. New HC gets to pick his assistants. Simple, and the right way to do things.

The UH Administration has known since at least mid-season he would probably leave. They probably already had some potential coaches identified. They were just waiting to see if they could talk Herman to stay another season. Wheels are already in motion.

For the record, Strong will be in the running for the Cincy job. Little chance he comes here as a DC. Applewhite will almost certainly have better offers, too (and I’m totally ok with that)

Yeah ya did don’t chilly outa this one … your actual words

“Any thoughts on giving him some consideration”

Consideration for what … janitor … grounds keeper … he is already TE coach but you were emphatic mentioning his HS HC experience for us so any Sherlock could figure what you were trying to imply

There are some people here with questionable intellect. Charlie Strong isn’t getting a D1 head coach offer. If Orlando is head coach, I’d be ok with Strong as DC because I know Orlando would be heavily involved with game planning.

And hell no to Strong as HC. He can connect and recruit. That’s about it.

Don’t understand your first sentence.

Sorry I misspoke, yes consideration for coach. However, I wasn’t emphatic I simply asked a question. You laugh but Art Briles was a HS coach and then came here turning things around. No need for you to be a dick.

I believe you are 100% correct. I would not be surprised if a new Coach is announced early this week.

Yes, the offensive coaching was just pathetic! :disappointed: Forget that despite playing with essentially an FCS offensive line for two consecutive years, we have finished the regular seasons #8 and #21 in scoring and highly ranked in passing, third-down conversions, and time of possession. And guess what? We have been ranked higher in scoring offense for two straight years than we have been in scoring defense. How can that be with such terrible play calling and such great defensive coaching? Sigh!
