Since Sampson took over here, UH is 7-0 against double digit seeds and 0-3 against single digit seeds.
I wouldn’t read too much into the latter. It took plenty of bad luck in two of those losses and we lost to the eventual national champions in the other.
I witnessed the Michigan shot in person and the Kentucky game on TV. The Michigan one hurts more because I walked back to the hotel and had to eat breakfast in the morning around the Michigan fans. Had that game locked up…make FTs or pressure the dribbler…
Michigan all the way. It was way more brutal in the moment and Michigan went on to the title game. On top of that the Poole buzzer beater is probably one of the 10 most iconic plays in the last 20 years of the tourney. It gets brought up all the time where as no one really talks about the Kentucky game outside of UH or Kentucky circles.
Michigan still hurts the most because of the more dramatic way it played out. I also think we would have gotten to at least the Elite 8 after beating Aggy
I agree that the Michigan loss sucked big time but for me it was the 1983 loss to NC State as #1 heartbreak. I hope that before I leave this world CBS will quit showing Jim Valvano running across the court celebrating. Guy Lewis paid his dues IMHO and deserved better.
We are now 1-3 against single digit seeds under CKS. This was our first win over a single digit seed since (7) Virginia in the 1984 Final Four and first win against a higher seeded team since beating (2) Missouri as a 6-seed in the 1982 Sweet 16.
