Is MLS declining in popularity?

They have failed to develop talent. Young players are comfortable,in Liga Mx instead of going to Europe to play against better competition and develop. There is also a generational gap, the young players are not as good as the players they are replacing when they were at their prime.

I have always liked the idea that had some support of a merger between the MLS and Liga MX.

agree, they do get too comfortable, why go to Europe, when u can get paid at America or one of the MTY teams instead…guess who’s telling FMF to play certain players? what a clusterf lol

Some teams have relocated.

As for Chivas, I agree, they will never leave Guadalajara.

Wow, hadn’t realized this. I guess it’s just YouTube tv that carries TUDN now (in terms of streaming service). Otherwise you need to get cable/satellite.

I have always hated this idea. The Leagues Cup is awful.

Except for a low % of niche outliers, Americans hate Soccer, WITH- A - PASSION.

The State of Texas only fields one P4 level Men’s Soccer Program and that’s with 2 of the richest athletic programs in the land (UT & TAMU) and in a state with a majority Hispanic population.

Our National Team consists of A) Rich Club Kids that pay their way into being noticed or B) Rich American Citizens that grew up in Europe and were actually taught the sport…Unfortunately none of those types have that “Junk Yard Dog” type of attitude so we fold pretty quickly under the bright lights.

Soccer continues to struggle on American soil.

Lack of Hispanics playing college soccer is more so a socioeconomic problem than a lack of interest

Americans do not hate soccer, there’s just a lack of interest

And much of the interest that exists is towards international leagues/premier leagues and of course the world cup

I’m not talking RELOCATION

4 new NFL teams in Europe + 4 new teams in North America is the end game.

Right now they are in the phase of educating Europe/ the World so they can increase the amount of players playing the sport.

Once they have enough “playing the sport” in Wurpoe, they can expand into Eurpoe because once there…they’ve reap the profits from the new markets.

On the Premiere League…the only way to get casual soccer fans, like me, interested is to have an American team in the # league, like the Premiere League.

They could add a NEW expansion team in Boston and New York and, in reverse, capture interest in the American market.

I have no interest in watching bad soccer played in the MLS.

I struggle to stay entertained during the World Cup, Euro Cup and Copa de Americas which I do watch.

I have no reason to watch a Premiere league with no rooting interest, locally…now if they had a US squad!!!

and poor African Americans playing football isn’t a socioeconomic problem?

What is the logic there?
Isn’t Soccer the MOST POPULAR sport in the world?

And they HATE soccer…this has been an ongoing narrative since the 1970s…It’s yet to get close to the popularity here of the Premiere League in UK

College soccer isn’t a revenue generating sport

College football is a revenue generating sport, and therefore, there is more resources available to get poorer kids into these programs

Even at the high school level, there is more resources towards football than any other sport

That’s my WHOLE POINT.

There is NO REVENUE because only a very small % of a niche audience of Americans care about the sport.

It’s OK… but to act like it anything but a niche sport, IN THE UNITED STATES, is not true.

Even the WNBA has passed up Men’s Soccer in the United States

College baseball isn’t a revenue generating sport either

As far as the WNBA, probably due to Caitlin Clark

Edit: there really isnt a profitable sport that can stand on its own in college athletics other than football

Basketball programs would shut down nationwide without college football

no…but the professional Baseball league is the best in the world and currently attracts the #1 player in the World away from the inferior leagues in his home of Japan

oh, they absolutely hate it. Hell, some folks on here hate whenever there is a mention of soccer lol.

I don’t know about this. I mean, if it did, maybe barely? I would think the MLS is slightly ahead of the WNBA.

I don’t understand why someone would hate a sport

That would imply the sport offends you or something

I personally do not have interest in soccer, that doesn’t mean I hate it or hate people that play it

It’s just too slow for me, that’s really all it is, but i understand why some people enjoy it very much

…and I’m someone who has watched 100s of matches, including Euro Cup Finals in the middle of a big European City, in the country playing IN IT and I do NOT GET THE APPEAL of Soccer.

because the U.S., historically, isn’t good at it lol.

I grew up around people saying stuff like: “Soccer is for puss**. Play a real sport like Football.”
I recall being 10-11 years old being told that lol.

We aren’t good because we deny OUR best, athletic, gritty players a shot at making OUR National team.

Most of those are Hispanic Americans that UNDERSTAND and LOVE the game.

Instead…our National Team is a Country Club Invitation Only type of squad…no Junk Yard Dogs …only technically sound trust fund kids that pay their way in

Soccer in the US is a spectacle sport

It’s popular during the World Cup, but outside of that, it loses interest

The MLS is competing with sports that have been around much longer domestically, and it’s also competing with international leagues for attention

The money in soccer is in international leagues, and the best players from the USA all end up playing overseas

If the MLS paid players more money, then the MLS would be able to steal players from international leagues similar to what the NBA/MLB does
