I agree with this. Postma is a great competitor. But all of his success at QB has come when he had to come in unexpectedly for Ward and the opponent didn’t have a chance to prepare for him. He did a great job (obviously) in the Memphis game last year and had some success against FSU when Greg hurt his ankle momentarily. The games he started where the other team seemed to know he would start (UConn last year and Lamar this year), he looked pedestrian at best (Lamar) and downright bad at worst (UConn). Given what I’ve seen of Postma, I’d rather see him return to WR. Given our depth at QB, I think he’ll have more of a positive impact for our team catching passes rather than throwing them. Just my opinion though.

I just want the best player to be the starter at QB. I’m going with an open mind. Not looking at stars or credentials before playing a snap at UH. CMA needs to make sure he does this, or it could backfired. Just remember the Ward & O’Korn situation.

Multiple people have compared our current situation to Ward v O’Korn (2013). I think this situation is much more cut and dry then 2 young QB’s with different styles going head to head.
The QB battle between Sells/King/Smith is where it could really get interesting.
It seems like we are always having this conversation. The prototypical strong armed QB versus the athletic one. Keenum vs. Joseph, Broadway vs. Piland and Ward vs. O’Korn. If past experience is any indication, the more athletic QB does better here.

I guess my question is how does Allen’s athleticism stack up against Keenum’s. Allen is no Greg Ward, but neither was Keenum to be fair.

Kyle Allen was Judas guy not CMA’s. Is going to be an open competition. Kyle Allen didn’t exactly set A&M on fire. If Kyle Allen wins the QB position, I will cheer for him. Until then, let’s see what happens.

Little of both. Allen wouldn’t have come or be staying if he and CMA didn’t have a relationship. That doesn’t mean he gets the starting job automatically; the idea all along is that he competes for the job, and, if he doesn’t get it in the spring, he can grad transfer.
Allen has good athleticism, probably about what Keenum had. Keenum had good instincts though which is what made him effective. Not real sure about Allen’s instincts. Allen’s also got a cannon from 15 yards in, but his deep ball isn’t as strong (at least that was the word coming out of high school). Hopegully, this offense will More suit his strengths than the Air RAID did.
In Kyle Allen’s defense, I don’t think The prototypical strong armed quarterback vs. The athletic quarterback is a fair assessment. Kyle Allen is very athletic. It makes more sense to say a pure passer vs. a read option qb maybe. I just don’t think we always need to box people in these packages. Greg Ward was made more of drop back qb with Herman and Applewhite because he was able to do that. Maybe it wasn’t his strength, but with the injury and the plan he became more of that. Kyle Allen is a pretty athletic runner. Is he Greg Ward talented in the run department? No way. I know that is just how we label quarterbacks and I do get it. I just think some of these prototypical pro style quarterbacks tend to get underrated in the athletic department. Of course it’s always grounds for debate. I mean is Brady a great athlete, or a great qb? Or is it a combination. For most I would imagine its a combination.

I think ANY QB has to be able to fit a system or vice versa. In the decades past UH did not always have a strong o’line that could protect the pocket passer. Some of Keenum’s most exciting plays and thread the needle passes were when he was on the run. The same goes for Kevin Kolb. Kevin was killed in the NFL because of weak O’lines and coaches insisting he stay in a pocket. Keenum was very efficient as long as LA O-lines held their own which was not nearly often enough. Problem was there either was no pocket or it only lasted 1 or 2 seconds. Guess what that does to a QB good or bad… concussions. Keenum was at his best i hurry up offenses and roll out pressures. Ward… he was just like… no, there is nothing like that. He could turn with impossible G force quickness, fake anybody out and somehow even though short for a QB, he could find a lane. No, he did not run in a lane. Maybe he had super adrenaline running in his veins that had his reactions quick enough to respond to the tackler in front of him. The most successful defenses against Ward were those that always had a player coming in from the side knowing how big his hook move would be… and it had to happen such that Ward didn’t know the defender was coming in.
In college, it’s most important that your quarterback makes plays when it counts as opposed to a qb who looks good getting off the bus. KA may be terrific but Ward made plays. I see Bryson Smith as the next GWJR

I hope people who think Kyle Allen should be named the starter before training camp practice, are the ones who have actual saw him in last year’s spring game, and not by name recognition. It all comes down by decision making, for me.

Keenum>Joseph
Stars, and HS credentials sometimes don’t matter. Let’s give every quarterback a chance during Spring ball.

Competition is the core for success. Again, it is valid for all professions. The drive inside you is the key to a W vs an L.
Yesterday was a great example on why the Patriots keep winning. They never folded. How many N.F.L. Teams would have given up? They adjusted and kept their focus. Atlanta thought they had it won. They started to play conservative and were not as aggressive on defense. That’s the difference between great Teams and great players. Many will say they chocked. Yes but it always two to tango.
It would be foolish to give the job to Allen on a silver platter. I’ll ask you. On what basis does he deserve the starting job? Spring practice has not even started yet. Let him earn the spot. What kind of an insult it would be for the other QB’s?
Do you all think that Brady was given the reigns after he got drafted in the sixth rounds? The sixth round is more or less the equivalent to an UFA. If it were not for their Coach Brady might not have ever played in the N.F.L.
What did Brady do at Michigan?
What did Brady do with the Patriots?
He earned it the hard way. I want to see our next QB earn it. Earn it like he wants to be the next Joe Montana or Tom Brady.

I believe Brady got his chance in 2001 or 2002 when Drew Bledsoe was injured. Once he was in the line up never gave up the job.
Its really going to ride on whether or not the OL has improved enough to effectively run or pass block. They didn’t really do either with any consistency last year.
