JD Periscope Chat: post-Tom Herman news

Chat starts around noon-1 pm yesterday:

  • JD came in late from Memphis last night
  • Wild morning & will be a crazy reporting day
  • Sources confirmed that Herman informed UH that he’s stepping down to take UT position
  • Sources also reported that at 5 am, Herman informed LSU that he was leaning towards UT and LSU decided to go with Orgeron
  • What’s next for Houston?
  • Sources say to watch Dana Holgorsen. Wouldn’t label as top candidate, but could be a strong candidate
  • Phillip Montgomery could be considered
  • Small faction that will try to convince RK to go after Art Briles
  • Jim Leavitt a good possibility - ties to Khator from USF days
  • Lincoln Riley been mentioned
  • Mike Leach a name thrown around
  • Have not heard about Meacham - sounds like he may replace Morris at SMU if he leaves
  • Outlier: Dino Babers
  • Told that PJ Fleck is probably not a good fit for UH
  • CTO and CMA have both expressed interest in the job
  • Very fluid situation as far as names, but sources that he trusts have mentioned these names
  • Why would Holgorsen leave WV? Making less than Herman this year and has never felt the right fit there.
  • Houston is a much better job than it was a decade ago. Facilities are up to date and job is attractive
  • Finally have coaches that want to come to Houston - not a Tony Levine situation
  • Orlando would be a fantastic hire - stability, continuity
  • Texas needs a DC desparately; if he doesn’t get job here, he’ll end up in Austin
  • Applewhite is the coach in limbo more than any other staffer; doesn’t see spot at LSU for him and can’t go to Austin.
  • Don’t know the logistics of Kyle Allen’s situation. Won’t speculate.
  • Not sure if Les Miles an option; thinks he’s a better fit at Baylor. Has said that he’ll hire an offensive minded coordinator. Have not heard his name really associated with UH.
  • Sonny Dykes is a name that he’s heard
  • Have not really heard anything about Charlie Strong
  • JD isn’t going with Herman to Austin

Lincoln Riley is only 33. Up and comer as Oklahoma OC, graduated from Texas Tech as a walk on player. Sonny Dykes was OK when UH was trying to build it’s program. I think UH has everything but a P5 now. He would be a meh hire for the fan base I believe. PJ Fleck probably would struggle recruiting wise. Don’t know his background real well but can coach. Would have to get some Texas connected assistants. Dino Barbers could be interesting but don’t know how much of a fit he would be at UH. Holgorsen, doubt UH brass would go to that well again. I prefer an up an comer who is ambitious and hungry .

Riley is just someone who would leave in 2 or 3 years and we would be doing this AGAIN!..no thanks…hire someone who is more likely to stay long term…
