Lack of Booms

name one.

Maybe not a ball of fire on a podium, but I watched him coach up a kid that missed a block in practice and it got me fired up.

Are you talking to me? Name one what?

EDIT: Mark Mangino, Bo Pelini, Kyle Whittingham, Gary Pinkel, Brady Hoke, Butch Jones, Brian Kelly.

Now show me the connection between, yelling at 18-21 year olds and how it promotes winning. Saying something louder and with more “fire” (getting all worked up) than the next person, doesn’t guarantee the player will fix their mistake and improve. It just shows that the coach is frustrated, and in that moment incapable of controlling that frustration. These are student athletes that have to be trained on proper technique and understanding. Yelling, and making faces does what as far as instruction?

You know, I’ve discovered that talking louder and slower in English to someone who doesn’t speak English doesn’t work either. And them talking louder to me in a foreign language doesn’t work either. Go figure.

lol Exactly. It’s the same for kids who are repeating the same mistakes in practice and on the field. Talking louder has little influence on understanding.

tell that to nick saban

There is a lot more to motivation than yelling. In fact that is anything but motivation…it is desperation.

Motivation is about having a team believe that you will lead them to victory.

We will get to see if he has it this year…so far, I ain’t seen it.

As to evaluating talent, Levine was apparently pretty good at that …he lasted 3 years !

And he got an extension after Year 2. Levine was pretty good at business too.

Nick Saban is also one of the greatest instructors of all time. He’s also a technician that’s heavily involved in every aspect of their football program. You honestly think yelling got him to be the greatest college football coach of all time? Yelling, in it’s entirety?

And Mack Rhoades was pretty terrible at it.

Best coach I ever had yelled both ways and louder at the good stuff.

In this thread we are complaining about the recruiting class 7 months before even the early signing period?

FWIW, When you coach at an Alabama and have 85 5* recruits, it is easier to be a genius. Not that Saban is not a good coach, or surrounded by great coach’s. In my view, a great coach gets 2-3* players and coaches them up.
If he was coaching at Georgia State, I doubt he would be the greatest coach out there…

That is one thing I liked about Briles is that he could evaluate talent and coach it up.

What you say or yell is a lot more important than the volume, IMHO. I bet you that Saban says more things that are instructive than destructive. You also need to know what motivates each individual – one size does not fit all.

Bobby Bowdin used to let his assistants do all the yelling and then he would get the kid aside and encourage him as well as quietly expand on what the assistant was raving about. It worked pretty well.

If it were true then we’d see a bigger battle between ohio state, michigan, LSU, and others who consistently bring in talent to their campus. BUT i do agree a great coach gets the players who dont get ranked as highly and make them 5 star nfl recruits.

Any chance Demarcus Felton from Tech transfers to UH?

Why does this rule exist. What’s it trying to accomplish?

It gives kids time to focus and relax instead of repeatedly being contacted by coaches the entire summer. Let’s kids hit the camp circuit and also decide where they want to go since this will really be the last down time before early signing day.
