Marcus Sasser thread

I know there’s alot of talented players out there. And if you’re top 100ish, you have pro-potential.

BUT, how was Marcus Sasser so overlooked??

Teams interested: Houston, SMU, Colorado St, UTEP

That one doesn’t make a lot of sense.

Mills, Hinton, Mark, etc…all recruited by P5 schools.

I looked at Armoni Brooks and even he had official visits to Creighton and Kansas St

Sass is essentially an undersized 2 Guard.
The Sampson system is set up for that type player to get lots of open shots. See Corey Davis.
Many schools have minimum size for positions unless you are a singular talent.

If you look at Galen Robinson, a few okay schools were recruiting him. At Rivals says: TCU, Wichita, Georgetown had some interest

But, Galen really couldn’t shoot as a freshman. He was a distributor & defensive guy. Developed his offensive game later (Junior and Senior years)

Marcus could score

played for a smaller aau team (urban dfw) and not huge high school… had he played in the nike circuit he likely would have been way more touted…similar reason for caleb mills

unlike football where you get scouted and recruited based on high school film, in basketball recruiting by coaches and scouting services are mosly based on aau tournaments, the only high school that affects recruting is the elite private school circuit

but note even if sasser had played in a major aau circuit his offer list would have way more, but still unlikely to be highly touted… a 6’1 sg unlikely to get 4/5star ratings

Also the DFW ‘19 class was absolutely loaded so he got overlooked locally as well.

Well said by both of yall.

I’ve looked at Sasser’s HS film and his athleticism has come along way.

With so many players out there, I wonder how Marcus caught the UH staff attention?

Cause now-adays, small guards shooting 30 foot, 3pointers is probably pretty common (Steph Curry effect)

All credit to him man. Except for his slight shooting slump last season, he’s been so consistent as a player at UH

UH wasnt a power recruiting at that point…houston still had to be going to the 2nd tier aau events and scout sophmores and freshmen

we’ve gotten to a point that we can recruit with the big dogs, but as early as 3/4 years ago we couldnt, sampson noted back then that they way houston has to get recruits is to figure out who will be big recruits before they blowup and build a connection with them early…to do indepth scouting and try to guess which players wre being overlooked

we gotten a few touted players the last few years, but sharp is the first we offered as a 4star and landed… almsot everyone else, we recruited as nobodies, built relationships with them THEN they blewup after we already had relationships with them

Sasser just doesn’t have pro measurements. Otherwise he’s a stud.

Galen wasn’t recruited to shoot. He was recruited to play point. Shead was recruited to play point, too. So it will be interesting, to me at least, to see what happens to Sasser next year if Shead grows into the point roll and is capable of running the show.

My point on Galen was, as a high school player, his offensive game was limited. Very quick, pretty good athlete. But I could see why scouts and P5 schools weren’t so high on Galen. He couldn’t shoot. He was a defense and fast break guy.

Marcus as a freshman, scored like 20+ at SMU. What incoming freshman could do that? One that has a lot of talent.

Like the guys said, Marcus didn’t play big time AAU, but the shot, the ball handling was there. Teams just overlooked it OR didn’t think it would translate

Good for us. One thing I absolutely trust our coaching staff on is the players they recruit. I couldn’t care less who else is recruiting them, how many stars they have or any of that. That coach found Galen and Sasser tells me something about his work ethic. It must be very time consuming to try to make a bunch of big time AAU games but then to throw in some small time AAU games just to see… Man, that’s dedication.

Ranked #399 nationally in his class.

I get basketball recruiting rankings can be difficult/biased.

But 399?

Recruiting rankings for the top 50-100 players are usually pretty good. Not always. But the talent shows on the floor.

After top 100, it’s all about hard work and good coaching. Other guys from class of 2019:

Scotty Pippen Jr (who’s now the SEC Preseason player of the year) ranked 213th in his class.

Deuce Mcbride (drafted by the Knicks) ranked 301

Grateful he’s a Coog!

Sasser has become more of a playmaker this season. Hopefully that continues to grow, it’s his key to getting to the NBA.

But he’s also improved his strength too it seems, very happy he’s on our team. 20+ points last 2 games is great!

When the Sampson’s first got here they were like miners looking for scraps….
It progressed to having their own little section of the river with a few pans looking for some small nuggets and some larger ones that had been overlooked.
Now they walk up to the river, pushing other miners out of the way and take whatever damn nugget they want regardless of size.

So far this season, he is playing like an All American. I hope it continues.

I wanted him based on pedigree alone. That type of bloodline rarely disappoints.
