Men's Golf: All American Intercollegiate Wrap Up

Men’s Golf just wrapped up the All-American, albeit earlier than expected due to the final round being canceled due to weather. The event, held at the Golf Club of Houston, featured 2 top 50 teams (#33 Florida State and #46 Baylor).

A tale of two rounds this week for the Coogs. After an even par (288) first round, led by Alex Frances posting a 69, the Coogs came out flat in round 2 and had 3 of 4 counting scores over par, posting 298 for a two day total of 586 (+10). Coogs had a chance to notch a win here had they had a good second round, but counting a 79 will never lead to a good team round, ever.

Braxton Watkins was Houston’s highest finisher, tying for 5th at -1, followed by Wochner in 11th at +1. Houston had quite a few individuals competing in this event (given we host it), and that group was led by 2021 Texas State Amateur Champ Austyn Reily at 144 for 2 days, locking in a top 10. Hopefully this is a confidence booster for Reily and we can see him back in the starting 5.

The same issues continue to plague the Coogs, and I firmly believe that if we can get the right 5 in the lineup at the right time, this team can shoot some good scores!

Coogs have been continuing to trend nicely, and seeing improvement each week is huge. They’ve got a big month ahead with some quality events. These include the Valspar Collegiate at the Floridian (unreal course and great field), The Aggie Invitational, the Bayou City Classic (co-hosted with Rice), culminating with the AAC Championships a month from today!

Results:

  1. Florida State (-7)
  2. North Texas (+10)
  3. Houston (+10)
  4. Sam Houston (+11)
  5. Mississippi State (+15)

Notables:
11. Baylor (+27)
13. Rice (+34)

*Oh, and for those of you knuckleheads keeping track at home, that’s the third event in a row Houston has beaten Sam Houston State, bringing that total to 55 shots over 3 events.
