Mylik Wilson is a dude!

It’s been incredible to see the massive improvement to his game this year. Testament to his hard work and his ability to accept coaching.

Really happy for him and he was nails tonight.

I would put Wilson up there with any of the guys over the last 10 years. He is the poster child for just stay and work on your craft and your time will come.

As crazy athletic as he is, I could see an NBA future for him. It may take a couple years but you don’t have to squint to see it.

Hyper athletic.
Laser focused.
Coming up big when we need him the most.

What a gigantic leap from one year to another. Didn’t see that one coming.

Without Wilson, no way be get the win in Kansas last night. Not only did he keep us in the game in the first half, he hit the cold blooded three pointer that allowed us to go to double OT and get the win.

He has gone from IMO don’t let that guy shoot why is he even in there
to give him more minutes and let the guy shoot. He can hit the big shots. Not saying he is Curtis Jones but he is becoming a heck of a reliable player. So glad he stuck around.

CLUTCH!

Congrats Coogs! It’s Hot Take Time:

Mylik Wilson’s game does remind me a bit of Curtis Jones.

His physical traits, skill set, mentality, and burst with combo guard handle is actually pretty gosh darn similar to Jones in a lot of ways.

Sometimes you have guys that are high-floor low-risk guys that are more or less finished products from the time they step on campus as a freshmen. No doubt, you need some of these guys in your foundation core.

These guys can be all conference type starters. The flipside is they remain more or less the same player with some steady but modest typical expected growth. I’ll put my own guy like Tamin Lipsey on blast and put him in this category.

Yes, Lipsey shoots distance better than he did, but it’s never going to be his game. The bulk of what he is has always been elite in specific easily-defined ways, to the point that he’s probably somewhat maxed out. He’s largely been that guy since HS probably.

For you guys, this is LJ Cryer. A solid ready-made high-floor steady eddy who has been a really good basketball player for a very long time, but he kind of is who he is all along.

I think the world of both of them, and I’ll admit its probably not the most flattering way to hear your game described, but this is not my fault. All the well wishes and positive vibes in the world aren’t gonna change that. It just is what it is.

THEN, you have guys like Curtis Jones and Mylik Wilson who just have that sizzle with unique traits you can’t replicate or quantify easily. It makes them harder to project, and even harder to sell to the moneyball long term purists.

Some players are more like lottery tickets. Others are more like treasury bonds. Only one of these has the potential to get you filthy rich from holding just one.

Jones and Wilson are lottery tickets. If they cash, they can change everything. In my experience, this is where the real gems are found. If Mylik gets there, he’s not going to have this long consistent steady path to the top. He’s going to be kind of frustrating and disappointing a lot of the time, and then one day out of nowhere… BAM he is him and the light comes fully on and stays on.

Don’t get too caught up in what he hasn’t done. Look at what he can do. This is what NBA GMs do. This is what Otz does when hes recruiting single digit transfers from Buffalo and Wofford lol.

Mylik reminds me a lot of a guy ISU would bring in and cause havoc with, with hidden POY potential.

I very much admire Mylik for his work ethic and tenacity. He kept us in the Kansas game and hit a clutch 3 for overtime. Heroic.

The Kansas game was not an anomaly.

He’s been the most consistent player all season.

Game to game he has points, rebounds, assists, defense and no turnovers or fouls.

He plays the point in relief for Milos with very little drop off.

He relieves any of the guard spots and delivers excellent minutes.

Could be conference sixth man of the year.

Anywhere else he’s a starting PG. so glad he didn’t transfer a couple years ago when he went into the portal.

Mylik’s transformation from JAG to integral rotation guy and Milo’s continued improvement to an all conference level player speaks to what a great coach Q is.

Can you think of anyone we have had here that didn’t improve under Sampson?

Only Damian Dunn. I never understood that.

Always been a Wilson fan. His potential was so obvious. Every game he makes a ! play but every game he would make a ? play too. Now he’s really working on his efficency, less ? plays and still all the ! plays

Ok I will give you Dunn. But did you ever get the impression he really wanted to be here?

I never thought he didn’t want to be here he just ended up not being a great fit for whatever reason. Nobody bats 1.000 on transfers.

There is a reason why CKS wanted Mylik. All of what we saw last night was always there. CKS is getting the best of Mylik. This is why CKS is an elite HC.

What I thought was interesting was how the Kansas D was shutting down our normal starting guards and Mylik was was making finding a decent shot look so easy

I’m not sure Wilson shouldn’t start. We’ll see how it goes the next few games, but take away a 13 point game against Utah, and Cryer is 9-37 (24%) from the field the last three games. I’ll let CKS figure it out.
