“I want to be here long-term,” Applewhite said. “I want to be here for the guys. I want to be here for the city and for the university … I think at this point in time in the history of this football program I think it is important to develop continuity.”
Hate hearing about wanting to stay long term…just too many bad memories of a particular former coach who said same thing…along with “if ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. I do very much want the Major to do well, though.
Well, no one is out there saying that the UT job (or any other job) is his dream job, so I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt for now. Unlike Herman, who had to build trust and respect from area HS coaches after he arrived here, CMA already has that trust and respect. He should be able to continue recruiting at a high level fairly easily. As long as we keep winning, this continuity is going to be awesome.
And even if it’s not CMA, at some point we will find a coach who is satisfied being a millionaire at a school where he has a legitimate shot of going to a NY6 bowl every year and a decent shot of slipping into the playoffs if he can put together a great 2 year run. If he puts together 9+ wins every season, he won’t have boosters trying to cut his legs out from under him and run him out of town. I truly don’t understand why some people refuse to believe UH is a great job.
Yes, but if you’re overhauling your staff every two years, you’re not going to be winning for long. Recruiting will suffer big-time. The '14 and '15 classes were pretty feeble. Scout rated both classes in the 80s. Rivals had the '15 class at #91 and the '14 group at #77. Fortunately the '16 class was a very good one, but if we had hired an outsider, we would have lost most of this class and finished in the 70s or 80s again, making three of four classes very marginal. That will be our fate if we can’t establish some continuity in the program.
Thats YOUR opinion. Mine is that history has taught me that in the last four coaches we have continually improved our lot, and only once kept level. Levine wasn’t great, but he wasn’t bad. 4 coaches in about decade and we’re continually improving the program. In YOUR opinion changing coaches leads to losing. In practice UH has done very well.
There is a lot that has changed the past decade that has helped the coaches win with all of these changes. New stadium, new conference, increased student support, increased athletic budget among others. This however, will be the first time we had a coach that we were struggling to keep around after just one season. Even before LSU fired their coach, it was obvious the 2017 class while still being strong with 3 star recruits, UH had only one 4 star commit and they switched before the season even started.
Don’t get me wrong, this is a solid class. It’s just surprising that even with Oliver being talked about so much on national tv, that momentum hasn’t carried over to other 4 star recruits committing yet. Now the remaining coaches are on their way to a bowl game not knowing who is staying and who is going and soon as everyone knows, the dead period starts.
Short of us hiring North Shore and Episcopal’s coaches on our staff, I don’t see this class having quite the impact last year’s class will have. It will be another year to see how it affects 2018.
But they do like to transfer back home once they figure out they are 3rd or 4th on the depth chart behind a bunch of other 4 and 5 star kids. That’s why it’s important to build those relationships anyway.
I also think having a coach who played for a blue chip program (and had to scratch and claw his way to playing time even though he was clearly better than the other guy with a more popular last name) will be a huge advantage for us in recruiting. He can genuinely and honestly tell these guys about the politics of going to a blue chip program and how they will get 4 years of exposure here as opposed to maybe 2 years somewhere else.
Keep establishing relationships with big time recruits and we’ll get a few who are smart enough to see what will happen at the blue chip schools or will transfer back when they get to the other campus and the honeymoon of recruiting wears off.
I honestly don’t take Applewhite, especially after his speech, as one to recruit by implying anything negative about his UT days. He said he plans to sell the UH experience and academics to recruits. I doubt he will focus on promises that a player will get 4 years on the field here vs 2 years at UT. Especially since you should never promise a recruit 4 years on the field anyway. You promise they get the chance to earn a spot and nothing more.
I certainly didn’t mean to imply he would promise anything. That would be stupid. Depth of talent is always going to be an issue at a G5 program. The chances of a stud recruit seeing the field before his junior season is far greater at UH than UT or any other blue chip program. That’s what I meant.
I thourougky believe that dr khator believes in continuity. She did it from Sumlin to Levine which was a disaster. Now it’s Tom and Major. Will it work? Don’t know but if Major fails at putting together a quality staff then history repeats itself.
I really don’t think it’s that much about continuity. I truly believe it’s about major himself. When the HS coaches call you to tell you to hire this guy and they are huge influences as to where the top recruits go, i think you listen. Upgrading our recruiting can be a game changer, and it seems we have a chance to change the game here. Just what i think though, only she knows for sure.
