Next Head Coach

When a football coach takes a team to an 8-4 record and a bowl appearance, they generally don’t get fired. But Major Applewhite DID get fired, because the circumstances warranted it.

The current circumstances of the performance in the baseball program, even if it ends up being an improvement in terms of the standings, warrant the coach not getting re-hired.

Also, improving the team’s record/finish and improving the team are not necessarily the same thing.

But Applewhite didn’t finish first.

That’s the point.

Had he finished first, he probably wouldn’t have been fired.

Bad example.

We DO fire football coaches at 8-4.

Applewhite and Levine proved that.

But we generally don’t fire them when they win conferences titles and finish first.

Though not an impossibility, it’s UNlikely we’ll fire a baseball coach if he finishes first.

We’ll see though.

Finishing first is a completely DIFFERENT “circumstance.”

He needs to make the tournament, imo. He hasn’t been since 2018 which is unacceptable at UH.

We are also moving to a new league. That changes the calculus. Good enough for AAC isn’t our future.

2023 would be the 4th year in a row of not making the tournament. Nobody went in 2020 with COVID.

I think there is a small glimmer of hope to get in this year. Incoming recruiting class looks stout and should make an immediate impact.

TW has done great things for the program. If he’s the guy going into the Big 12, i’ll support it.

While true, we weren’t good in 2020. That was very likely setting up for a rough season.

But 4 years not making the tournament is also really bad.

Would like to know - are UT and A&M coaches having to coddle to these same coaches in baseball or they’re going out their way hand delivering talent to them?

I never hear how those relationships with those programs as it seems like the best players naturally make their way over there without much hesitation

I agree if he wins conference, regardless of the awful schedule, it would be tough to fire the guy, especially after a successful career here.
At the same time we have been on a downward spiral the last few years and things do look bleak going into the Big 12.
Since he has not had his contract extended this cannot bode well with present recruits.
Don’t fire him, offer him a spot in the athletic department in fund raising or whatever.
With Todd’s experience he could be very helpful to a new staff.
That said if Todd refuses to be reassigned then we might have an ugly problem on our hands.

Pez wouldn’t be firing Whit either way as his contract expires end of this season. Wish him well, thank him for his service and move on. The Baseball Program NEEDS a fresh direction and face in charge…it’s beyond stale right now

We will see how it works out. With our pitching I can’t really see us winning the conference. But I hope we do.’
No new contract is not a good sign for him. It’s basically the same as saying you are close to being fired.

And that is why we have gone from wondering if we will host a regional to wondering if we can pull off an upset and win the conference tourney to get the auto-bid.

You must be sorely disappointed we are doing so well. Beating the #8 team in the country, beating cross town rivals, the season is turning around. Big series with WSU this weekend.

All these years, I had no idea that wins and losses are only real if you want them to be. This will be a game changer for me…

Thank you! Your apophenia is truly a gift. :sunglasses:

If you’re to dense to understand what multiple people are talking about I don’t know what to tell you….other than SOS is not that hard to comprehend.

You brag about the two wins over ECU but neglect the fact that 12 of the teams wins have come against the worst of the worst….and are only 5-9 against quad 2 teams……ask yourself why only 7 wins are what are considered good wins….and yes, such a thing does exist….this isn’t little league.
Last year the schedule was bad, this year it’s atrocious….

I can also guarantee you that if you asked the players they would tell you the same thing.
They would also tell you they would rather have a schedule, that if they played reasonably well, would give them an opportunity of an at -large bid.

Would you rather play a horrible schedule, finish 15 over .500 and not sniff a regional…or play a quality schedule and at least have a chance at a bid?

Even if the team finished 15 below .500 at least they challenged themselves and the possibility of the tournament was real.

And real quality players, high D-1 quality players would not even think about coming to UH at this point if they knew they were gonna play crap competition……the only reason there are some legit guys( who by the way are still not on campus) committed to UH was because they are entering the Big 12.

And before you say I’m not a real fan or some other stupid crap….I have been to every regional and super other than the one where we were the number one seed and got shipped to ASU.

Your ignorance is a gift as well.

Anything else you need explained to you like your five don’t hesitate to ask.

This is a great resource on effective communication. It covers when to cooperate vs when to compete, how to avoid apophenic arguments, debate vs dialogue, etc.

Whatever you call that above… honestly no worries. It can happen to any of us… Me included. You get fired up about something actually relevant… Next thing you know, you’re deep in the weeds, 8 paragraphs, oversharing your personal attendance history (props btw, we need more butts in seats for all sports!) lol trust me, I’ve been there.

Hoping you can grab a margarita somewhere and enjoy your Friday evening. Go Coogs!

Close thread. Not worth it.

And you thought I would be reflective and get all into my emotions by being passive aggressive and condescending ?

You fancy yourself to be some sort dime store intellectual and that’s cool, that’s your thing. You probably also realize you don’t know what the hell you’re talking about in regards to UH baseball which is why you deflect to this lame take.
You don’t know me or what my background is regarding baseball….and that’s okay too….but with your lack of knowledge it’s probably in your best interest to not assume.

Remember, you’re the one that chimed in with your initial condescending post….not me.
You can say you didn’t but you did. There are a very dedicated group of fans that are regulars on the baseball board….I could be wrong but I don’t have any recollection of you being part of any meaningful conversations on this board.
So when you chime in for the first time maybe leave your assumptions and snarky little tone out of the equation….
If you want to get the last word in that fine but this will be my last response to you.

I’m on board as long as that decision is made for the right reasons. In my opinion, he’s been given extra time because of what he’s done for the program, so that’s not a good enough reason to maintain the status quo. Winning the conference this year but not making the tournament doesn’t really look like progress, but it might be enough given other factors.

I hate bagging on any of our head coaches, as I don’t think it adds anything, so I’m kind of done with it.

Lol still have to win conference tourney to be a 4 seed somewhere, hope they do it but damn dude you really had to go fishing for that one. Idc what the record says, the OOC was pathetic and this conference ranks 10th best in the country. But whatever makes you feel better

The improved record and winning the regular season title gives the admin enough cover to not spend extra to buy CTW out. However, if there’s no money needed, you just move on to a new coach if you can get one you believe in.

Reminds me of SMU’s Coach Jankovich in hoops. They just let Jank’s contract expire and went a new direction. Jank likely would’ve had a better record this last year but it’s a bet that the future will be better than the recent past.

You will never convince me that a win over #305 Alcorn State is as meaningful as a win over #1 Wake Forest.
