*Check out some of the new treats you’ll be able to devour when you attend an OU football game this season (you can see a full thread here). I think the obvious big seller of this group will be the Horns down donut masterpiece. Having said that, the donut could be turned right-side up if it falls into the wrong hands, so we’ll all need to be extra vigilant on Sunday. If you see something, say something!
Rattler is a five-star signee who was considered the nation’s top dual-threat quarterback in the past recruiting cycle.
“Spencer Rattler back there is one of the guys simulating it. Obviously seeing Jalen (Hurts) this fall camp certainly helps. He’s going to make you pay with his feet,” Oklahoma defensive coordinator Alex Grinch said. “I don’t get in the comparison business, but I know that much … (King’s) ability to scramble. If you leave a man open, he’s going to find him and he’s going to make you pay. Sometimes doubly if you have good coverage because then he’s going to get loose and be running downfield.”
Oklahoma has done this the past couple of years for Game One. Riley said several position battles aren’t quite decided yet.
The entire offensive line save for center Creed Humphrey is a prime example.
“Not strategic,” Riley said. “This is a big week for us. We still have some position battles going on. We have some spots where we will have multiple guys play. We haven’t made some decisions yet on starters. Even in a couple of positions, we have as many as three guys that can play and play a majority of the game. It gives us, as coaches, a better chance to evaluate it and hopefully gives you guys something a little more accurate midweek.”
“Houston is a really good job, a really good football program in a great city that’s had a lot of success in a lot of periods throughout the years,” Riley said. “ It was something I had definite interest in at the time.
That’s a lot of or’s!
“When you play a good team in the opener, you can’t do things like we did in that game,” Riley said. "We turned the ball over. We had an enormous special teams mistake. We gave up a ton of third downs defensively.
“We had a lot of missed opportunities against a good football team that day.”
That’s what the Sooners have to avoid Sunday. That’s where the lesson of three years ago comes in handy. Again, I’m firmly in the OU-will-win camp, but when you are facing a good opponent, which this Houston team is, and you have questions yourself, which this OU team does with a new defense, a rebuilt offensive line and a new starting quarterback, a couple things going sideways can tip the balance.
Three Manvel graduates now play at Houston: King, Carmouche and safety Deontay Anderson.
“I just remember leading up to it, there was a bunch of hype around the game,” King said. “A first-round playoff game in Texas is a pretty big deal. I knew Jalen already before the game. I knew he was a great player.”

So many variables… That is why we play the game!
