Tech had pretty poor QB play during stretches of last year.
I’m not sure King would have made a huge difference last year. If we had started King game one Tech would have just prepared for King. Their game plan against Allen was about as good as it got as far as opposing defenses preparing for a QB. They have three legit NFL prospects at LB, and got Preston Gordon who tore it up at Rice last year and had Alabama and TCU wanting his services.
Tech also has all OL spots returning, and gets back an RB who played very well as a true FR but sat out last season. He joins a pretty good running back they already return.
A winnable game? Yes. But it’s not going to be easy by any stretch. Keep in mind they ran for 200+ against us last year, and return every part of that running attack and add a mobile QB.
Those 200 yards were pretty much 2 runs of 84 and 73 yards. On their other 31 rushes, they averaged less than 1.4 yards per carry. Also had a 77 yard reception. Just need to not give up the big play.
One of their biggest weapons, especially against us, was Keke Coutee…he’s in the NFL now. He was the one that caught 11 passes for 161 yards and a TD and probably could have had more if Shimonek hadn’t missed a few throws when he was wide open.
But Tech is always good offensivelepy and it’ll be tough up there. Hopefully, we don’t commit 5 turnovers as we did this past year.
Interesting that there is one player from the Texas schools on the 1st team All-Big 12 Offense…and he is from Baylor. Very interesting times over there. If you go by this, it looks like OU and West Va are the teams to beat.
Iowa St with three is a little surprising. It’s good though that Kansas, KState, TCU and Texas could each get two on the 1st teams.
OU is considered by most to be the overwhelming favorite. WV with Grier is considered a strong possibility at 2. Most think the race for that 2nd spot is wide-open though with everybody except Baylor and Kansas in the mix.
Late grad transfer out of Austin; son of Cougar basketball player, Jerry Bonney:
Bonney, a defensive back the past four years for the Texas Longhorns, is joining the Texas Tech program as a graduate transfer. He was at the Red Raiders’ practice Tuesday, though not in uniform.
The 6-foot-1, 205-pound senior from Houston Lamar can play this season. He played in 37 games for the Longhorns and started 15, including the last three Tech-Texas games.
Ward combined for 500+ yards and 3 TDs for Tech 2 years ago, but missed most of last year to injury. Was expected to be a big part of the Tech offense this year.
