We already have a huge swath of land at Wheeler and Cullen that’s extremely close to five different dorms, Greek housing, and multiple student apartment complexes. Just build on top of lots 8/9 and give the Cameron Building a new space. This really seems like the most obvious call in the world to me.
We should put a mixed use area there . Wouldn’t be any issues like Scott street.
We keep talking amongst ourselves without telling the people in charge about our ideas so we’re simply wasting time talking to ourselves with no results.
That spot would be perfect
I think we need someone who can talk to Khator about this and see what she thinks
Our problem comes diown to ONE problem…we still target majority low ROI students (commuters, transfers, those that have zero desire to feel connected to their school).
We need a 80/20 mix in favor of TRADITIONAL HIGH ROI Students!
Im going to give you a real life example of a school that threw their mission statement in the trash can and did a 180
Texas A&M
They once ONLY accepted white males
Not exactly a recipe for a diverse traditional coed campus.
Well…they WANTED to becone Traditional and atarted accepting women and minorities.
Fast forward to today, 50 years later, Texas A&M HAS university districts , like North Gate, that cater the TRADITIONAL STUDENTS the sought after.
In fact, their high ROI/ Low ROI breakdown is celebrated there.
They call the LOW ROI Students the TWO PERCENTERS.
So 98/2
Im just hoping we get to 80/20!
We have 80% HIGH ROI TRADITIONAL STUDENTS and a University District is a no brainer!
We are getting closer but are still a LOW ROI Majority Campus.
Plus, our graduation rates magically go up
We have more engaged students and alums
And surprise surprise become a Destination University
Generally speaking your correct, we need to admit students that are high rate of return to give back in some ways but not sure if we could achieve 80% but need to trend upward but again the people in charge need to know and address it.
If you really want a vibrant campus environment the solution isn’t “make Freshmen live on campus,” it’s “don’t let Freshmen have parking passes.” Cars are the real blight here. Nothing says “commuter school” like a gigantic surface parking lot that takes up like 1/3 of the campus.
If they wanna live off-campus and take the bus or the rail or carpool with their older sibling or whatever their freshman year, they’re more than welcome to do so, but coming to campus and immediately leaving as soon as your classes are over shouldn’t be a palatable option.
This is a retcon and not really applicable to us. There were women and non-corps students (and Black students, who were integrated at the same time) who wanted to go to A&M prior to these changes. UH, by contrast, isn’t exactly rejecting a bunch of “traditional, high-ROÍ” students.
