As I said, I was a commuter and I am for the traditional campus with freshman required to stay on campus. My three boys went to other schools for the traditional campus experience, and yes, fraternities.
YES college is about academics but its also about so much more.
The Greek system teaches you life lessons you’d NEVER get in a classroom. …everything from events planning, to social etiquette, to leadership to managing budgets, to loyalty, etc
Im so glad i went Greek at UH and didn’t do the Commuter…leave the second my class ended tyoe of thing
I will say when i moved to Austin, and i saw the “off campus” housing you speak of, and i was like damn that looks like pure fun, living in a village of likeminded students. They have entire villages set up with restaurants, bars, and plenty of spots to kick it and hang out here
It literally nothing but UT students living in these neighborhoods, i.e. akin to the third ward
Their greek system and student organizations system dwarfs ours. The surrounding blocks around campus supports students staying on/near campus after class.
The difference is traditional students view their college days as the best of their lives…the period between teens and young adults.
Most of our alums ONLY see it as a place to get a degree which is sad because there are so many other benefits for that chapter of your life.
One that you return to the rest of your life!
So glad Khator GETS IT but its been an uphill battle fighting our dinosaur alums and politicians
