We already have a divide of rich SEC and poor SEC schools.
Maybe Tennessee put this in to keep them competitive with Texas, Florida, A&M, Georgia.
It will separate them from schools like Mizzou, Arkansas, Mississippi State, etc

lol I don’t think I have sent money to athletes at any level knowingly.
Do you know of any high schools who are boosting ticket prices to pay athletes?
Bottom line if UH adds 10% to go towards athletes I will stay home and watch what I can on television
How much were season tickets back then? if you can recall.
I don’t remember. But i remember it being a huge deal for us to have season tickets.
I posted this in another thread called:
“Massive Instability since Yeoman.”
I’m glad to see other old coogs post similar emotions.
Massive Instability occurs when the world we grew up in changes (as in everyday).
Stability is about feeling safe by everything that surrounds us (home, economics, defense, technology, etc.). Name something that hasn’t changed dramatically. I can’t think of anything (even the stars).
Regarding sports, I grew up in an age where players, coaches, stayed with the team many years (you didn’t need a program to keep up with who’s who on gameday).
I moved on from professional football with the creation of free agency. Turned my focus to college football. Now we have NIL and a majority of fans only accept winning and expect to be in the CFP to continue their interest and support. That is too narrow a view of what constitutes success for me to put my emotions on the table for games.
The reality is college football today is a picture of what the newer generations of supporters (and media companies) expect. I can’t blame the newer generations because it is what makes them comfortable today.
As always, change is always changing faster.
I only wrote this to try and understand for myself why I became no longer enthralled by college football. It’s because I no longer get a sense of excitement, contentment, and peace on GameDay.
When we win consistently, the stadium may fill up a couple of times a year, depending on the opponent.
Exactly what years has UH averaged 100% stadium capacity or even over 40,000 for attendance?
UH can do well, but I do not recall any regular history that proves it. Maybe I am just too new a UH fan…
2016 was our best year and the stadium was only sold out for Louisville and the OU game at NRG.
There were games when our attendance was low 30k.
Our best attendance year was probably 1979. We’ve never averaged more than 38K.
The only thing that has been proven is that better records generally result in better attendance (of course) - not regular sellouts or a full stadium.
I went to UH vs Louisville game absolutely packed 43k stadium was filled.
Went to UH vs southern miss game one year. Stadium was packed to capacity.
It’s proven. When we win consistently, people come to games and we can fill the stadium.
Why not add the 10%? The government provides guaranteed student loans. So the tax payer pays for it if the student can’t.
Not being political, but since loans went through the governments and banks got out of the student loan business, the enrollment everywhere went up. And with the demand, so did tuition.
One game here and there does not prove anything. I asked what years. In other words what season averages (for full seasons). Need to see fans maintain attendance over a season or more to even begin to prove it.
Those both happened to be winning and exciting teams and the fans supported them. It’s proven if you win consistently the fans will come out and support. I think fitz can do it and prove it again.
There is a legitimate question why Tennessee needs to impose a 10% surcharge to season ticket holders to pay athletes. According to Sportico, the football team alone reported $134.7 million in generated revenue in fiscal 2023, on just $59.1 million in operating expenses.
They have a waitlist of 15K people. Even if some people do not renew their tickets, they know that other people will.
