OT: Texas A&M's 12th Man Donations Down

I don’t think that’s how it works pal

funny…that’s exactly how it works for the rest of the P4.

Houston is full of alums from all over they proudly declare which school they are from the first time you meet them.

It’s their family!

This is totally fabricated BS.

for you, yes, it seems fabricated.

Your mind can’t comprehend what I am talking about…“but we have a medical school”

That’s the disconnect…you have no idea what we are talking about.

In fact I met someone last week…first few lines " I went to Michigan"

Another one was wearing a “Virginia” polo on a professional teams call

That’s, how it works but not for Houston Cougar alums…in other markets

Sure bro. Sure, when I do business with people the first thing they blurt out is the school they went to. lol. Do you even listen to yourself?

yeah…the president of our company (HQ in Dallas) ends Company Wide meetings, across all the offices, with “Hook Em”.

I’ve had a client show up in a meeting with a Texas Tech cap.

Not sure which rock you’ve been living under but hat’s my point…people are really proud of where they went to school.

They gladly return there every weekend to be close to “their family”. The distance is unimportant.

I know many UH grads whose own parents discouraged them from living on campus because they thought living on campus was a negative…as if they’d become drug addicts or something…lol.

That’s honestly what their parents thought.

Now, in their defense, many of those UH students were first generation college students so they and their parents had no clue that living on campus and being involved in student organizations, greek life, intramural, religions groups, etc. can build a lifelong network OUTSIDE of their academics.

I really am starting to believe you fit into that group…you don’t understand so you bash

We need to have a REAL conversation about this because it is holding us back

This. Many students, still, are first generation students. We can hope that if they have kids they will try to encourage them to go to UH.

I think parents of first generation college students, especially non- American parents, have a very negative view of US Universities and sending their children there.

Not all…but the ones less familiar with American culture, definitely so

I have one hispanic UH friend, a graduate, whose dad told her to not be involved and come home the second classes end because he didn’t want her to “get raped”…True story

Many parents have a very negative view in regards to “living on campus”, There is a cultural fear level going on

I talk to many UH grads and I asked them candidly about their time at UH, whether they lived on campus or commuted, and how involved they’ve been after graduation

where do you come up with this crap?

from actually talking to UH grads and their parents

Have you ever heard of confirmation bias? You’re living it!

You may have to explain this more in detail. Most non-American parents view sending their children to US universities as a great choice for their children to get an education and a good paying job after university.

Hispanics are very close knit. Many live at home while attending college. And many can’t afford to take out loans to live on campus. Best to stay at home, from a financial standpoint.

It’s not confirmation bias …it’s a proven characteristic among parents of first generation college students especially with Hispanic and Indian families but less so with Asian families.

And before you judge, my dad was the first person in our entire family, since we immigrated to the United States, to attend college so I 'm not some 8th generation silver spoon type of kid

There have been many studies on this and UH is the perfect laboratory as it is locate din a multi-cultural city.

Parents of first generation students feel a complete sense of FEAR and lack of control due to the unknown…They have no visual as to what college life is really like for their child. They probably only see the rowdy frat party movies

I had an Indian classmate and we picked him up from his house one day, off campus, and his Indian dad gave us a whole speech on how he didn’t want his son taking drugs while he was in college.

I’ve never done drugs so I thought the message was a little harsh but his concern was not…the University is scary for parents of first generation students and many actively seek to limit their child’s time on campus.

For many parents of first generation college students, living on campus is a hard NO!

I know many examples.

For many parents of first generation college students and graduates, the ones in school are the meal ticket to pulling that family out of poverty.

Trust me I have been in that situation.

It is no different than the helicopter sports parent who wants their kid to make it to a professional sports league to get them into the next tax bracket.

for most of us immigrants, going to UH is a Great thing and something we are very proud of…we actually get excited at receiving an opportunity to get a great education in our hometown…everything else is secondary, including sports

You nailed it exactly…EVERYTHING else is secondary.

THAT is why we are getting our butt handed to us in forming a meaningful life long “family” connection with our alums.

Over 2/3 of our alums leave UH without such a connection. And many urge their children to attend other universities to seek that connection.

So much so, that posters, like norbert, have NO frame of reference for what we are even talking about. He has no clue!

He keeps responding with “but we have a medical school”

Talking about missing the forest for the trees.

There are many P4 universities, many without a medical school , that have the elements we are lacking.

I can’t imagine any professional sport knocking the UT Longhorns off the front page of the Sports section in the Austin American Statesman. If it did, Longhorn fans would boycott and Austin would lose its local newspaper.

Absolutely

But that’s kinda my point why UT and UH cannot be compared

UH is never going to be UT or A&M just due to the sheer fact that Houston has developed around industry while Austin developed around UT

College Station has more in common with Austin than Houston

but you guys keep thinking our growth is static…that’s not the case.

If Houston wins a championship, or even a deep playoff run, you start picking up bandwagon fans and the more fans…the more media coverage.

The Oilers/Texans have no Championship to speak of and of course, we will never match their level if UH ever won but we can definitely win over the hearts of Houstonians if we did.

I’m not buying UH was always this way…will always be this way…we can change that.

Plus, with each passing day…Austin is becoming more of a transplant magnet…like Houston in the 70s/80s.

Why would they care about a school they didn’t attend?

And don’t rule out Central Texas (Austin + SA) getting a NFL franchise one day…it could happen

Did Seattle develop around the University of Washington or around industry?
