My premise is that most really good assistant coaches are usually expensive. I don’t think all expensive assistant coaches are really good.
I’d be happy if we could just keep the guys that we want to so that we could build some continuity. People are always going to look to move and there’s always a school out there that will overpay - we just need to close that pay gap to make the decision harder.
Dumpster juice is more fitting for Dana.
Remember when Holgy terminated a beloved x Coog Wr coach? Then hired a young GA as WR coach? That young Wr coach turned out to be pretty good and people were then mad when Fritz brought in his own WR coach. Now that young Wr coach Dana hired is with him in
Nebraska.
Do you think Fritz would have chosen to replace Etheridge?
Looking at it objectively, he has one year of experience at an FCS school. He may turn out to be a great hire. I hope so.
Of course he would have kept the staff BUT the point is dont diss a young coach until he proves incapable of doing the job.
Funny the Miami badketball coach quit crying poor. So it appears Miami puts sll its funding into football.
I get it, and I haven’t done that. But comparing the WR coach thing to this isn’t useful - totally different situation and not even remotely predictive of success.
The new guy will get his shot. He has big shoes to fill.
Sounds like this was a HC Fritz hire and not DC Anderson. I wonder if Anderson even knows Hall, since that is who he will report to.
Let’s make this work.
Since this happened within days it shows Fritz knew this was happening snd had his list and choice to hire ready.
If Ethridge took such a big pay cut to come here, i think its likely this was a gig where he was helping CWF out and getting the defensive secondary off to a good start. If an offer comes along where its a lot more money, then he likely takes it. CLEARLY CWF was not surprised by his leaving and had someone ready to step in who he knows and trusts. Seems OK to me.
Once again, Coach Fritz is part of the manpower. He’s fighting to get traction with what he has. People get replaced. And things work out if you have a good program builder.
If you ever saw the movie, “For love of the game,” Billy Chapel (Kevin Costner) said to a friend that was leaving the team for a better deal on another team. Chapel told him, “but this is your team.” The guy pointed to his family and said, “No, this is my team, baseball is my job.” (As best as I can remember.)
Every year we will lose players to other teams with bigger NIL bucks. Coaches are the same, we can get a coach and let him show his stuff, and if he shows to be really good, we have a great chance of losing him to a team with a bigger assistant coach bag. It’s just the way it is.
I agree to a point, but it’s the same in the business world - either raise the floor so that people are less likely to look elsewhere for money, or keep starting over with new hires every year.
There’s a cost to each approach, and it’s really difficult to near impossible to build a highly competitive program with the level of coaching churn that we have. If we don’t improve the situation, we’ll keep getting the same results.
This isn’t a knock on any of the new coaches. They’ll get a chance to get roasted soon enough. ![]()
If we were so poor, we would not have done so well in the transfer portal. Our salaries for coaching staff need to be upgraded, but that shouldnt be a problem with considerably more money coming to us from our Big 12 contract. We are just now coming to where we will get full amount. This was an unusual case, with a coach taking a big decrease to come here. We dont know the details, except CWF was completely ready when news came, to bring in someone else to take his place. And i am SICK of this, “we’ll always lose a coach who is any good” stuff. We are in the BIG 12 now, not cusa…We shouldnt be losing coaches all the time. Miami is an ACC school, and they dont have any more financial resources then we do…Whatever the problem is, FIX IT!!
I agree - it’s a priority issue in addition to funding.
But I get that we’re in transition and still dealing with some financial mistakes and haven’t started getting full conference money. Patience sucks.
Schools are going to lose coaches. Ohio State lost a coach to Penn State.
We’ll get a full share in the summer of '26.
Since this will be our 3rd year in Big 12 FB, i guess thats what…75 or 80% of full share for next season? Even that is a lot more than we are used to…Happy day in summer 2026…
