Player Number Changes for 2024-2025

Kordelius Jefferson 15 to 0 (not retiring 0 for Sasser apparently)
Joseph Tugler 25 to 11
Mercy Miller gets 25
Chase McCarty gets 24
Milos Uzan gets 7

No one wearing #1, pretty clear sign we plan to retire Shead’s number in the future

i think you might be looking too deep into the jersey retiring aspect of it …there are only 4 new players big chance none of them just wanted 0

Are we just retiring numbers like that? Every good player that comes through gets a number retired?

Sasser and Shead, were 1st team All Americans.

Both apart of the 2020-21 Final Four team.

Its a good question. It will certainly take several years, 5-10 at least, for them to retire their number.

If you look at Fabian, Grimes, Sasser, Shead. Does 1 of them have a chance at a jersey retirement?

Sasser & Shead for sure based off playing 4 years. All-americans, all conf, Conf POY, Def POY, Sasser - 1st Rd pick, Shead - 2nd Rd pick.

You look at how other schools retired numbers. NBA HOFs or guys who put crazy college stats.

Sassers total college body of work…had 1 terrific season, 2 pretty good seasons.

Shead, same thing. 1 terrific season, 2 pretty good seasons.

We’ll see. As time goes on, recency bias goes away

sasser and shead at some point…

grimes also but how his nba career goes will play a big part in that.

Kordelius Jefferson may be that good he’ll give that number justice!

Wasn’t Wilson #11?

If so, and Tugler takes 11, Wilson should likely be on the list too. Not a big deal to me, just asking.

Dunn was #11

Marcus Sasser was a consensus first team All-American. If we don’t retire his number, he would be the only first team All-American in UH history to not have that honor

Wasn’t Jamal also a consensus first team?

Pretty sure Jamal and Marcus are more decorated than Clyde was at UH. Yet no one is saying anything about his 22 being retired.

I assume Clyde’s NBA career was taken into consideration for the retirement of his number. If a player was on the 50 greatest players list, his college jersey better be retired as well.

Shead was also National defensive player of the year…

Yes, Shead was also consensus first team and National DPOY.

Elvin Hayes - 2X consensus 1st team All-American (1967-1968), 1968 National Player of the Year
Otis Birdsong - 1977 consensus 1st team All-American, 1977 SWC POY
Hakeem Olajuwon - 1984 consensus 1st team All-American, 1984 SWC POY
Clyde Drexler - 1983 consensus 2nd team All-American, 1983 co-SWC POY
Michael Young - 1984 3rd team All-American

Marcus Sasser - 2023 consensus 1st team All-American, 2023 AAC POY
Jamal Shead - 2024 consensus 1st team All-American, Big 12 POY, and National DPOY

0 and 1 will likely join the wall at some point

I think the difference is that those guys ended up having long NBA careers and some were considered some of the greatest of all time. Let’s see how Sasser and Shead’s NBA careers go first.

I honestly think that NBA careers should have zero bearing whatsoever on whether their numbers get retired here. Heck, Sasser passed Michael Young for career NBA points in his 32nd game.

I definitely think that it should.

sasser and shead are locks at some point

is grimes gets atleast 1 allstar in the NBA he will join them too (being the star player of our final 4 team)

but honestly i hope we stop retiring numbers and just retiring jerseys…

they 100% will have an impact… retiring are a way of highlighting the greatness associated with your programs… it shouldn’t but it will

if grimes becomes a 4x NBA all-star and a brand name, and sheads nba career doesnt go anywhere, grimes will be retired before shead…

keep in mind these will be decided in 20years, our current recency bias wont remain but NBA accomplishments last

don chaney has been announced that his number will be retired … its almost exclusively tied to his NBA career, as a comparative to other greats who aren’t retired, that’s what he has over them. Rob Williams purely off college achieved more… rob as a 3x nba allstar, his jersey is retires 25 years ago
