Have you been to USC’s campus?
I don’t know a lot about Rice’s internal culture even though I’ve worked
with a number of the birds. They are a strange lot in many ways.
But the UH donation problems (?) and lack of ongoing athletic support is
a fascinating, long term problem, that I’ve not seen a lot of progress in for a number years.
We now have on campus stadium, no more P6 opponents, and on campus beds has increased. What’s next steps ?
Note, everybody here is probably in the “good coog” category. We are passionate enough to re-engage in these discussions. We Attend events and donate. A lot of us would
like to see significant growth in both areas. I’m of the old UH culture , and while I’m happy
with my college experience, I look around and see it’s not thriving or growing as it could be. So
things need to change IMHO, or just be okay with UH being what it’s always been (which is pretty good academically, and only big fan support when you have the once in every 10-12 year seasons).
Compared to Rice, we are a model University in connecting with our students/alums…lol
We have our own internal issues but Rice has ZERO connection.
We easily take over their stadium when we play there.
I’ve only met/worked with a few Rice grads but they all gave me Sheldon from the Big Bang Theory vibes- incredibly smart but severly lacking in social skills
Yes I have been to the USC campus.
Along with Rice, Tulane, Georgia Tech, Cincinnati, North Texas, Naval Academy, SMU, TCU, A&M, and UT.
Our campus has no common denominator with USC’s. Their campus at least has a grocery store without even mentioning Target and other amenities. We have none of that. Their campus is thriving because of it. USC over time and Billionaire donors created a true “village”. We will never go to the next level until the our neighborhood is truly gentrified. We need a grocery store, restaurants, bars etc. Until this happen we will never have a true campus.
We will never have it because the biggest reason USC is USC is because they’re in Southern California
USC was never supposed to be super elite or prestigious yet it became that way because it attracts a crap ton of wealthy kids from all over the country
There’s nothing about the city of Houston that really brings out of state kids here unless it’s an athletic scholarship or a honors college kid
Houston is not and will never be Los Angeles…
SMU is the “USC of Texas” in terms of the genre of kids they get
Even UT can never compare to USC like that
I could not disagree more and I never wrote we will be equal to USC’s campus but great days are ahead. The moment a full gentrification happen we will see a complete transformation. This has happened all over Houston. The no zoning laws will work in our favor.
I’m not saying gentrification won’t help. It will.
But at best, gentrification will keep Houston kids that would’ve otherwise attended other Texas schools stay here.
It’s going to be a LONG time, possibly never, until we start regularly attracting out of state kids. We will never be able to attract west/east coast kids. It’s only Rice, UT and SMU that gets those kids.
Texas A&M hardly gets them.
Believe it or not, a lot of the USC rejects end up at SMU. So many Californians are at SMU
Also, if Houston’s climate continues to get hotter, it’s just going to get much harder
I am perfectly happy getting Houston and Texas kids. Kids from other states are a plus.
Me too, I just wouldn’t use USC as a benchmark even if they happen to be in a metro area / bad area. We will never be USC which isn’t necessarily a bad thing so to speak.
UH’s momentum is trending more towards the way of UT.
If UH had a robust Greek system, we would’ve already blown Tech, Texas State, SFA, SHSU, etc. out of the water.
Who the F wants to be in Lubbock
I think one reason UH’s Greek system is not as strong is the university and certain politicians have historically embraced UH as a commuter campus.
It’s a shame, because all of those mansions lining McGregor could have been bought by the University to be a Greek Row and and an entry to campus.
Oklahoma had this setup.
Sigma Chi, SAE and Phi Kaps had houses on South MacGregor and Sigma Nu had a house a block from campus. I always thought South MacGregor would be a great “fraternity row”, but you have private residences on that street and it would never have worked financially.
and i know DU used to have one as well
It was a crappy one story house
So like Animal House?
No, not like Animal House…like the example i gave from Oklahoma.
Some of literally, the MOST IMPORTANT, things i learned in college, .about how to be a gentleman, at that age 18-20 were learned in the time in a Fraternity at UH.
And…no thats not the partyng part…I’m talking about the other invaluable things i learned.
