I don’t think Sakho did much of anything. He was pretty much MIA in the most crucial months and lost 18 pounds from which he did not recover. To say he was a bust will be an understatement.
Sakho being a bust is too harsh. Sakho had his moments in the season. He was serviceable for what Coach Sampson wanted.
If you considered Sahko a bust, I would say your expectations were not realistic.
21-22 - Francis/Roberts/Carlton/Chaney/Fabs
22-23 - Francis/Roberts/Chaney/JWalk
23-24 - Francis/Roberts/Tugler
24-25 - Francis/Roberts/Tugler
25-26 - Cenac/Tugler/Sakho
For his role he was a bust…
That’s not all on Sakho… he shouldn’t have been expected to be able to replace Francis in that spot off the bench, but we had to make a move in the portal because it was getting too late in the off-season.
Well if there were never any plans to use Cenac in the paint and Sakho went according to plan with 13 mins per game, then this season was much more of an experiment than I originally thought.
Because I doubt Harwell signs without some sort of plan to play around 25 minutes per game.
Sounds like we were going to be finesse and there was going to be a drop in defense from the very beginning. If that were the case, why did it seem like Sampson was expecting something different?
And if we really want to be honest…Chase and Mercy were pleasant surprises. Looks like they werent in the plans at all. How many minutes would they have if Harwell and Walker were productive? They just stepped up and were ready when called.
Love this analysis.
Refreshing to read your viewpoint and certainly agree.
The thing that put a wrench in these plans was in the summer when Sakho, Tugler, and Harwell missed valuable time healing from injuries. Imagine if all of them did the same workouts with Cenac and Flemings, we would have been a more cohesive and sustained unit.
Harwell had more than enough practice and opportunity…
Dude couldn’t hit an open shot… missing time over the summer didn’t cause that… he was just in a slump and never came out of it.
Also, I may remember this incorrectly, but I think Sakho was in the summer workouts until August when he had to have the procedure on his back… I remember him in the workout posts during the summer.
Agreed that he could’ve used that time to help him get ready to run the monster… but he was NEVER going to help us with our HUGE lack of post scoring last season and that’s what I mean by he was a bust… that roster spot needed to be someone who could rebound and defend but we also needed offensive production from that spot and we got ZERO offense from him.
compleytely wrong… “missing time over the summer” he missed close to 2 years (missed his junior year, limited minutes half his senior year, to then be reinjured)
im not sure how you think that doesnt affect a shorter, especially in a transition to like college
missing summer was big beause he had to build himself back up
Can’t say I was surprised by Mercy or Chase. Mercy had shown in limited minutes as a frosh that he is a tremendous athlete with great quickness, and he had been a prolific scorer in high school. I was surprised by how ineffective he was as a frosh, not by the way he turned it around last year.
As for Chase, I kept hearing that he was the best 3 point shooter on the team and had been waiting for him to find his confidence, so again, I wasn’t surprised when his shot started going in. What surprised me was that Harwell never got his shot back.
He shot 43.1% from 3 his senior season…
Wasn’t that AFTER his knee injury…?
Fact is that he was in a major shooting slump last year for WHATEVER reason… and CKS gave him plenty of in game opportunity to work through it; he just didn’t execute… plain & simple.
limited minutes on half the season… with the high school 3pt line
Right… the shooting stats that earned him a 5 star recruit ranking and Utah Gatorade POY award … he must’ve played more minutes than you’re indicating…
I’m sure his shooting skills will reemerge at Gonzaga…
Based on several interviews and statements over the years, playing time was supposed to be determined by how you practice for Sampson.
So at some point, Harwell looked good in practice to where Sampson felt he should play him. It just did not translate in games.
I doubt Harwell was looking gimpy or hurt in practice and Sampson still decided im going to see if you play through it and still play you. He had to be hitting some shots in practice…just couldnt get them to fall consistently in games
There is barely a difference in college and HS three point line…common man.
A couple of feet does not change your shooting by 16% from three.
And how do you explain less than 30% from TWO point shots?
I don’t think Sakho was a bust. He performed how I expected. I think the season injury and Ramadan limited his performance later in the season. Also I don’t think Coach Sampson expected Tugler to be in foul trouble 3 minutes into a game.
I think everyone thought there was always the possibility that Tugler would be in foul trouble three minutes into the game. Well, maybe not everyone, but pretty close.
If anything he should have had MORE TIME to practice shooting since he couldn’t do other drills…
I understand that Sakho did what he was supposed to do and that is why people don’t look at him as a bust… and I do appreciate how hard he played for us…
I’m saying that him being our first big off the bench was a bust with respect to the level of importance of that roster spot.
it 100% explain its… when you add the full context
ive never done a full analysis on high school to high major d1 transtions…
but i have done one from juco to high major… and it was 6-9% 3pt percentage drop… and its harder in juco than high school… and juco line is the same as d1…
and difference in line is huge, no idea why you are down playing that… they wouldnt have moved the line back if it had no affect
there is actually data about this on the ncaa website… the 2008 shift from the high school line to just 1 foot backwards (20 hs line to 21 old college line) saw the biggest drop in 3pt percentage in the history of the 3pt line… the current line at 23 , the ncaa expereiment in 2019 with the NIT theat year (unvealing it early just fo them) all teams saw a drastic drop in their 3pt %
adding the full context that he missed junior year and a noteable portion of his senior year… and was minutes restrictions when he came back (like petterson at kansas) when he came back…and then reinjured himself.
that is not a slump…that is player recovering from an injury that needed a offseason to recover
Darryn Peterson was a an all american, all big 12… on minutes restriction and missing a significant portion of the season … what does winning awards counter about my point?
The line in college is NOT 23 feet.
Its furthest distance is 22’1” and lessons to 21’8” as it flattens out.
