Why a toothache is so painful and unrelenting.

“ That’s the trigeminal nerve (specifically the maxillary and mandibular branches), which happens to be the largest cranial nerve in your head. Because it routes pain signals straight to the brainstem with zero buffer, dental pain ranks among the absolute most intense sensations a human can physically process.”

I had two deep-cleaning procedures at the dentist this summer. Each time, I endured no fewer than five shots to deaden the pain (I lost count after five). Now I know why it takes that many.

I became familiar with tooth pain for the first time two weeks ago. The pain woke me up out of a dead sleep, and I sleep hard. Then waves of intolerable pain every hour, settling down to tolerable pain in between.

Two and a half days of it before round the clock antibiotics, muscle relaxers and Tylenol/Advil got rid of it. Followed by a root canal and two crowns a couple days later.

Apparently I’ve been grinding my teeth to pieces lately. I sleep with a night guard now. And I pay a lot more attention to keeping my teeth apart throughout the day.
