Yeah, there wasn’t really an option to not use the portal this year. We needed warm bodies, and to a large extent we had to take who we could get. I anticipate that being different this next recruiting class.
So far out of 60+ transfers maybe 5 are actually good. The players make the same mistakes weekly. It is a mixer of bad coaches and players. The offensive line and defensive line is an indication of the program. Not including maybe 2 defensive backs who are good. The linebackers rotate like a pair of shoes. The staff does not know who is better than who. They coach players not to lose, instead of playing to win.
It can be if you have the money and the talent evaluation. Needs to be said and understood.
Agreed T-Moar. Think about how late into the game he came in and had to deal with a train wreck and only 7 signed recruits. Most that left were players we never hear of or moved on to lesser level school (speaks to CDH recruiting). We lost a few really good ones but were left with finding the bet available warm bodies. Some of those may not be developable and thus the current results, plus having 63+ players trying to jell.
It definitely is partially up to Coach Fritz. What it’s not up to is you or I.
I have to believe this statement is off base when you consider what CWF was left with and relatively late start.
Fritz can WANT it all he wants but if someone like Golden gets offered a better deal to transfer …then, he is gone
Not sure I agree with this. What I do believe is that our OC is coaching/strategizing to minimize the exposure of our QB’s which is backfiring on him and the team. If the QB’s aren’t up to the challenge, move on to the next QB. If you roll thru all your QB’s during the season, then that’s definitely a dumpster fire. It may be that we have a dumpster fire at QB, but I still believe QB3 can perform better than our QB1 & 2 have shown. In his limited time, QB3 has not been intimidated by the game. In fact, he’s appeared comfortable, confident, and composed. I just can’t say the same for QB1 & 2, so let’s allow QB3 to play his way into or out of the starting job.
There’s a reason why our basketball program experiences the least amount of players hitting the portal of any program in the country. Kelvin Sampson. A HC does not have absolute control on this sort of thing but they have a lot more control than you’re saying.
High School recruiting is the same.
NIL may not be the be all, end all, but it sure doesn’t hurt. One of the major problems with UH is the lack of NIL support from the faithful. We have some great alumni and supporters to NIL, UH just does not have enough of them; and UH needs a lot of them.
Ask any accomplished head coach you may be courting for a head coaching position. One of the first questions that coach will ask is “What does your football NIL look like?” Very few coaches will put themselves in such a disadvantage. Coach Sampson talked to Coach Fritz coach-to-coach about UH’s NIL. If Sampson gave his seal of approval, that is good enough for me.
It is here. Colleges have no choice. Players do not have to stay or stay loyal. I do not like it because Coogs have always had to build an O-line. So now more so than before a head coach and position coach that can explain and motivate guys to buy in is even more important. Which is why I was mad when the D-line position coach left. That guy was motivating and getting guys to buy in.
The O-Line is the hardest thing to build - college or pro. But, unless you buy top ten players, it takes time to develop them.
Relying on the Portal is NOT a good way to build a program, but so is entering the season with 50 scholarship players. Also expecting results in year one of a new coach is NOT a good way to build a program. Sometimes transfers are just depth, better than walkons.
where did he say this–he didn’t
Ofc it doesn’t hurt. And a good HC knows how to upgrade every component of a program. What they also have the ability to do, is to be selective in the type of players they recruit. If you look for the right personality types you can weed out a lot of the mercenary types. Guys can always leave for a crazy pay day if its offered but across the country at every semi decent program, you hear stories of guys choosing to return instead of taking a bigger pay day. No reason to think we can’t create cultural where guys choose to do the same.
He definitely didn’t say he won’t use the portal. Just that his focus in recruiting will be going after high school talent and focusing on retaining/developing those players. The portal will still be utilized just more in a supplementary way.
It is about the players, we do not have enough good ones to win in p5. We are not blue blood and we do not have a competitive nil. It will take time (unfortunately) to build and chip away at our position. That is the type of coach Fritz is, and I think that consideration was taken into account in his hiring. Given the rapid changes in college football, I have to wonder if we have the time to let the roster changes play out before it is too late. That being said --“GO WILLIE”
What year is Kelvin in? How did that first year go without House and Thomas?
Yah that’s the point I’m trying to make. Gotta give coach some time.
