Rice stadium gets new name

Good problem to have, too many seats and downsizing. At some point we hopefully will be increasing seats. But, luxury boxes and endzone facilities are the future. I grew up in West U. and many times would sneak into Rice stadium to play football on astroturf, until security kicked us out. My friend parked cars in his front yard for the Super Bowl, $5 a car was big money back then.

I was at that game. Massacre on both sides of the ball!

Judging by the photos I’ve seen of their grandstands in recent seasons, their crowds, as far as true bodies in the seats are concerned, have perhaps been in the hundreds at best.

Even at 30K, they’ll have a lot of empty seats except when they play a really marquee opponent with lots of visiting fans.

Rice’s problem is all the old rivals, who are virtually all in P4 now, are no longer willing to come to Houston to play them, except maybe once in a while at Reliant. As you say, always lots of empty seats nowadays, no matter how much they shrink it.

They actually have done renovations to the restrooms over the years.

Really? Also, I think they took some out for that end zone facility they have.

Being charitable, I think “put some seats in” means replace bleachers with chairbacks, which Rice has virtually none of

Ahhh… you might be right. That makes more sense, so I misunderstood.

I still call it by its original planned name: Houston Stadium

Maybe they could add a track to the now vacant upper deck area
