Just FYI UH does own many of the lots (mostly vacant) between Cullen and Scott and the Gulf Freeway and Elgin and has owned them for years. At some point UH could acquire the remaining lots in that area through eminent domain if there were a provable necessity and a public benefit, which right now there aren’t.
Rice doesn’t own all of Rice Village, but it does own a lot of it. Rice Village was originally developed to be the downtown of a town named West Houston. All of Rice Village is located in the West Houston Addition. However, West Houston was not economically successful enough to grow from being just a subdivision into an incorporated separate city. Nearby West University Place, which also began as a real estate development, began in 1917 and it too struggled to grow until it became an incorporated city in 1924 out of necessity because the City of Houston would not extend its electric lines out that far from its own downtown.
What has the city of Houston done for U of H?
It is a simple question. I am on campus at least once a year. I see new building popping up replacing older ones. Apart from a small bar on the edge of campus nothing has changed since the 80’s/90’s. Downtown on the other end is improving with new bars and restaurants. UH and TSU are left on an “island” with very little prospects for improvements.
The main question is why is this happening and has been happening since the later 60’s?
The good news is that all can be changed if the city of Houston wants, yes wants to do it.
This is about transportation norbert for the area. I am looking at a complete gentrification of the neighborhood. It should have been done and started in the mid 60’s. The exact opposite happened. For the ones that get it we all know why but this will be getting outside of sports.
Other major cities have revitalized their downtown and the surrounding areas. Houston has revitalized downtown but noting toward the third ward or very, very little. The city of Houston clearly does not give a … about UH.
Because Houston never cared about UH. It cares about what makes money.
Houston also has make sure the suburbs’ interests are in mind. If you kick out the residents of third ward, then they will go into the neighborhoods where they are unwanted (historically speaking)
Rice is so rich they can throw 120 million towards a stadium project that seems a complete waste of time…The program is so low that almost no one goes to their games anymore…literally. Who cares if they connect their stadium more to Rice Village? Its aggravating that they can do stuff and we cant do anything!
Looks really nice and will be great for their program. I think the size is perfect for them and the connection to rice village will be awesome. The renderings show an indoor facility as well.
