Are they really lurking, or are they just there? I hate headlines like this. 
Sure, it’s a click bait headline, and I find that mildly annoying but humorous too. But what bugs me most is that this type of discovery was made by Chinese scientists.
Not too long ago, research like this was the domain of US scientists. We need to invest more in our universities if we want to remain competitive.

The country’s investment in research and development has reached parity with – and by purchasing power measures has surpassed – that of the United States, according to a March 2026 report from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. Both nations have crossed the US$1 trillion threshold on research spending.

What kind of a propaganda piece is this?
Did at one point in the article show the ccp infiltrating our universities and stealing research secrets? The answer will be no.
Did at one point in the article show how damaging these stolen research information has been to our economy, industries and maybe more importantly our military?
The answer will be no.
The ccp has done the same thing in Europe and South America.
Their motto for decades has been to steal information to benefit their industries and their military. The “free world” has been dumb enough to let them get away with it.
That’s my art teacher with the lantern.
this is really nothing new, scientists are always proving new theories. the one that still disappoints me is Thomas Gold and his theories, largely discarded and he has been dead for over 20 years.

responsible source with high ratings.
You certainly can make a case of spying and espionage from China. I think there is lots of good corroborating evidence out there of that happening. But that wasn’t the purpose of the article.
Here are facts that should be the focus.
We are now being eclipsed by China in areas we have dominated.
In 2019, China surpassed the U.S. in its share of the top 1% most-highly cited papers – what some call the Nobel class of research. By 2022, it had taken first place globally in most-cited papersoverall.
In 2024, China overtook the United States in total scientific publications – the first time any nation has displaced American dominance since the U.S. itself surpassed the United Kingdom in 1948. Researchers found that China overtook the United States in scientific output even earlier. That same year, China pulled ahead in the Nature Index, which tracks publications in the world’s most selective scientific journals, posting a 17% advantage over the U.S. in outlets long considered the gold standard of scientific excellence.
These are facts. Sobering as they are, if you didn’t get the sense that we must act now to re-establish our place in scientific reasearch, you completely missed the most important part of the article.
You missed my point. The author can point out that number of patents pursued by the ccp’s sponsored companies…that is what they are. Make no mistakes about it. The ccp has one intent. Dominate at every level the world’s market. They have operated with every free/open economy without any regards for these same markets. They are operating as if they were immune from any penalties.
Nixon opened the flood gate in the early 70’s. Fast forward to today and we are more or less dependent on a country that uses slaves for its labor. We are dependent on a country that freely steal one trade secret after another. Whose fault is this? Of course it is us and the politicians that have been bought out to look the other ways.
You might not remember but during the clinton years Chinese businessmen of all kinds were squatting at the WH. We sell off our economy to a dictatorship? Yes we see the consequences today. It is very easy to write a piece like this. The author has to go into details on why this is happening today. She did not.
If authors wrote about that in every single piece on China, no one would read their stuff. This was a focused piece.
What you’re referencing has been written about. It’s not going to be included in every article.

where we stand today in regards to basic science research That is something we can do something about, by robustly funding of NSF and other things.
Not disputing or challenging your grievance s about China. But that’s not in the spirit of this thread which is about scientific discovery and who is doing what in science today.

The author is all about patents and trademarks and we are now far behind. I am replying that these ccp’s led companies have been stealing trade secrets for decades without any consequences. The consequences are now. You steel trade secrets? You betcha buddy boy that a patent will come out of that. That the entire intent of them stealing our trade secrets.
On the bright side, now we can steal China’s technology.
Win-win.
