The morning started out with the #HTownTakeover circle drill with the defense completing a clean sweep with wins from Javian Smith, Matthew Adams and Nick Thurman.

The scrimmage did not feature kickoffs or punts with the offense and defense starting drives at different points across the field to simulate game scenarios.

The Houston defense led the way, allowing just two touchdowns, both in scenarios with the drives starting inside their red zone.

Terry Mark pulled in both touchdowns from Kyle Allen, part of his five receptions for 45 yards as he had touchdown receptions of 12 and 14 yards. Allen took the majority of snaps at quarterback, completing 30-of-50 pass attempts for 247 yards. Mulbah Car led Houston on the ground with six carries for 22 yards. Marquez Stevenson totaled the most receptions Saturday morning, pulling in nine for 47 yards.

Defensively, Isaiah Johnson, who recently converted from wide receiver to defensive back, tied linebacker Roman Brown for the team lead with five tackles. Defensive end Zach Vaughan had four tackles, including one sack to go along with one fumble recovery. Khalil Williams and Terrell Williams each picked off Allen once to record the morning’s two interceptions.

Houston returns to practice Tuesday morning with its seventh workout of the spring session, its first of three practices next week including the second scrimmage of spring.

Those two stats stand out. So glad to have Marquez back. Seems like they were in mostly short yardage today. Rushing totals don’t look good, but I don’t know the structure of the scrimmage.

Man, that practice facility takes up a much bigger chunk of the gap than I was expecting it to. The skyline view is gonna take a big hit it seems.

The view was only good for tv. They need to close the upper level in the west end to match the east. It’ll add some more seats fix that stupid gap. Makes the stadium look unbalanced. The “view” is much ado about nada in my book.

Kind of concerned that we haven’t seen Bowman Sells out there. JD said prior to spring break that he was going to miss the first practice or two because of an infection, but we’re 3 weeks later and still no Sells.

Way things are going, Allen’s going to win the job by default.

Nice action. Defense was swarming and hitting everywhere which is good to see. Stevenson had a couple of nice catch and runs. Catalon had one nice catch and run. Mark’s one TD to the back of the endzone was a nice catch. Allen also showed off his wheels a bit.

The other site seems to think we are in deep trouble and that the scrimmage was terrible and we have hired Helton 2.0. I don’t know how you can learn anything from a 1st scrimmage except what you need to work on, which is the point.

I do agree that the new coaching régime has a lot to prove; but we should give them a chance before our fans start to criticize them.

In the recruiting front, they seem to be doing OK with promoting the football program & brand.

Two sides to that coin. Its just as hard to tell that a team is looking good in practice as it is tell they aren’t looking good. When someone has a long run or a long catch, is it the offense looking good or the defense looking bad? It’s a lot easier to catch a ball over the middle when you know you aren’t about to get your head knocked off right as you touch the ball.

I think Spring practices is about learning new plays, staying in shape, showing the coaches who works the hardest and who has the best attitude. Being in great shape, making plays and having a great attitude is the best way to ensure you are a starter at game time but it doesn’t tell the coaches or the fans how well the player will perform at game time and it doesn’t guarantee they get to stay on the field.

Good point, we need competition especially if Allen went 30/50. Great and good players need to be pushed. This is the first scrimmage time to build from there.

Since we can’t tell from the low yards-per-completion, out of those 20 incompletions I wonder how many were on actual deep posts??? How many were over thrown or just dropped? Wondering how many long balls we’re going to call to try and stretch out defenses since Allen supposedly has a better arm than Ward?
