The Houston Zoo is holding a birthday celebration for UH’s live Cougar Mascot, Shasta VII, on Saturday, September 14, 2024, at 10:00 AM. Shasta VII is turning 2 years old, along with his brother, Louie.
Sounds like a fun event for the kiddos, and those UH fans young at heart.
What ever happened to the Zoo live streaming a feed during football game. I swear that was something they said would happen when Shasta VI was taken in by the zoo. Am I imagining that?
For a few games we had a live Shasta at the games, it was a big hit. The zoo was able to promote adoption of animals and give an update of cougars. Would love to see her make an appearance at a big game. For us old timers that remember Shasta living on campus, I thought it was great.
That was a huge draw to the campus–most of the students and lots of visitors would go by her enclosure to see her. Especially popular on game day when the coog handlers (cooger guard at that time I think) would take her to the game. They had several big leather leashes on her, normally she was docile, and when they walked her there or to her cage for transport folks gave plenty of room! Today, with TF and others, we could have like Texas 'scape where it could roam (Louie also). What a draw!! My Gkids would freak out totally. (bet if they had a donations thing it would really help with the upkeep) Sure miss those days.
In the “It ain’t happening department”, I would love for UH to build a cougar habitat on campus, ala Tiger Mike’s habitat as LSU. This cat has better living conditions than most of us. I remember Shasta on campus in the small cage. In the absence of a cougar habitat. I am fine with having the Houston Zoo as Shasta’s home.
