Space X does it again

Try, try, try again: go over the data and try again. Mars is getting closer and mostly on Elon’s dimes.

The initial space program rocket, the Vanguard, failed 8 times in its first 11 attempts. It ain’t easy to pioneer.

Very true. However don’t forget the Saturn V was 13-0 and most
powerful rocket ever up until recently. It’s F-1 engine are still the single most powerful rocket engine ever built. That was all pioneering too.

Some want to spin a yarn that NASA was not very good or SpaceX is better.
It’s not that simple of a story. No doubt SpaceX has done some amazing things
recently, but no need to tarnish NASA in the process.

yeah their V2 Starship has gone 0-3

seems like just a few months ago they were “landing” v1 starship on water in the Indian Ocean, but as soon as they switched to the V2 with its “upgrades” they have been having major issues.

they get loads of valuable data from these launches, even on the “failures”, but 3 in a row is a pretty bad look.

Or SpaceX could spend 100 billion and take 20yrs to develop an expendable rocket like some organization I know

On time and money I have seen these estimates - 14 years and 32 billion. Ive seen estimates as high as $49 billion, but this says $32 billion.

Budget. NASA has spent $26.4 billion on SLS development since 2011, through 2023, in nominal dollars. This is equivalent to $32 billion in 2024 dollars using the NASA New Start Inflation Indices. In 2024, the US Congress approved “up to” $2,600 million for the NASA Space Launch System.

Is starship being funded by NASA?

Privately funded

Total Program Costs: NASA is projected to exceed $100 billion in Artemis funding by FY26, according to NASA’s Office of Inspector General (OIG), NASA budgets, and independent analysis. This includes development of SLS, Orion, HLS, and Gateway. By 2024, approximately $93 billion had been spent.

Total Development Costs: Estimates for Starship’s overall development range from $5 billion to $7 billion as of early 2025. Elon Musk has stated that Starship’s development cost is less than 5% of the Saturn V (adjusted for inflation, ~$5 billion).

Not totally, I think they are getting a billion or two to develop the moon lander which is the starship with legs.

Ah, so that was prior to going 0 for 3 in 2025 vs 13 - 0. So can probably add to that
estimate.

And starship is fully reusable, artimis is not.
