T&F - Top Canadian U20 decathlete will be attending UH

Mechler and Daniels will make tracks to worlds

More specifically, the local track and field phenoms discussed what they’d be wearing when they represent Canada at the IAAF World U20 track and field championship, scheduled for July 19-24 in Bydgoszcd, Poland. Athletics Canada informed the two they were on the team this week and the full roster was expected to be released Thursday.

Mechler, who needed to top 7,200 points, recorded a Canadian record of 7,592 points to finish first at the recent Panamerican Combined Events Cup in Ottawa. He is aiming to shatter the 8,000-point barrier in Poland and hopes that will be good enough to earn a medal.

Mechler, a graduate of Elmira District Secondary School who trains with First Attempts Jump Academy, will attend the University of Houston.
