Less than 10% of Bakken oil is transported by pipeline. Around 2% of Canadian oil is transported to the US via train.

And as I understand it, Illinois and Iowa share an interconnected power grid, so while Illinois may be using more, the wind-powered kwh are shared by both states.

My first environmental job in 1971 was looking for water pollution problems and seeking abatement solutions. It was common for businesses to dispose used oil along fense lines as weed control. It was hard to convince them it was a problem. It killed the weeds and as the oil degraded new weeds came back so they thought there wasn’t a problem. Back then there were even some engineering circles that sang “the solution to pollution was dilution.”

Times change.

My grandmother in SW Louisiana used diesel to “edge” her yard. Very effective

In the gravel disposal method, what exactly is the gravel supposed to do? It doesn’t absorb anything or make it clump up like kitty litter.

It doesn’t seem like “modern science” was necessary to understand that this was kind of stupid. :laughing:

At least using it along fence lines and such dispersed better than just pouring it over a bunch of rocks in one hole.

The gravel is to allow the oil to settle in one place and not pool over into the yard.

FYI - I’m not claiming this is a good idea!

But gravel doesn’t prevent the oil from leaching into the surrounding dirt. :thinking:

This was just a terrible idea all the way around. :laughing:

My dad used to dump after oil changes, until the law changed. Surprisingly, he then followed and recycled it (or whatever they do with it to dispose of it).
