Let’s face it, the hard drinking wild man persona only works if you are winning big. If you don’t it is just sad and pathetic.
When you look at Dana you see a guy who has spiraled into alcohol addiction and has lost control of his emotions and his pride in personal appearance.
I am not trying to be mean but he is out of shape and what little hair he has he has let grow ridiculously long and stringy. He looks awful. He looks like an addict, which I believe he is.
His emotional out bursts have gotten to the point of being strange and sad.
When you look horrible and you act even worse, how do you expect to get 18-22 year olds to have discipline and attention to detail. You certainly don’t, so why would they.
I am sorry but he needs to step down for his own good and the good of the players and the program. When he gets his life in order, I think he can get back to coaching and will probably be great at it. But right now it is a train wreck.
He was like that at WVU. It’s not exactly new for Dana. What i’m most shocked by is you allowed him to make Shannon f’n Dawson his OC. That guy is a cancer and one of the worst coaches in college football. He is however Dana’s drinking buddy so I guess it makes sense
I’m not here to crap one him while he’s down, but again this is nothing new for him. He was getting kicked out of WV casinos, there are videos of him while he was at WVU that leaked out of him being smashed and obnoxious, and a ton of other rumors about his behavior, mostly involving alcohol. I enjoy a good tanking now and then myself so I’m not preaching here, just saying this isn’t new behavior for Dana by any stretch.
I think that Coog51 nailed it, and that’s 41 years of sobriety talking from me. Alcoholism is a progressive disease (it’s rampant in my family, as several members have died of acute alcohol poisoning). When he was bragging about his back yard being the best sports bar in West Virginia, that was not a good sign. I don’t know CDH, have never met him. But there is something seriously wrong with the program beyond injuries and talent. Discipline starts at the top of any organization and the head coach obviously has none.
When Dana was at WVU, he was the man. Everybody knew him because West Virginia doesn’t have any professional sports and WVU football is everything to those people. He was known everywhere. In Houston, he can be more anonymous and not be the face of the number one sport activity in the state. That combined with the fantastic night life in Houston I’m sure was a big draw for him to come back. Along with a similar salary and a high-powered drinking buddy (and the rest of the H-town mafia)…and we are where we are.
Not sure how much confidence we put in Deadspin, but they have a good article on the supposed incidents.
(EDIT) PS: A simple google search reveals several incidents including the Mardi Gras resort and casino in Charleston WV, Wheeling Island Racetrack, and someplace called Oglebay.
He got kicked out of two different casinos. I personally know the people who removed him from the Mardi Gras. While you are correct that Stewart asked a media contact to dig it up it doesn’t change the fact that it actually happened.
If we are honest with ourselves, we knew who Dana was when he came back to Houston. The question is, do we let him destroy our football program as we move into the Big 12? I can almost guarantee that this situation will not improve. Go Coogs!
I don’t think attacking him for drinking and calling him and alcoholic because he likes to drink pertains to him coaching. Let’s stick to the subject
We haven’t seen him make a fool of himself outside of work so it’s fine. He needs to understand what he is doing and has been doing with the team is wrong. That’s the gripe
