Do Catholics ever say “Not my Pope” about legitimately elected ones?
Some probably do, but they are BAD CATHOLICS when they do, in my opinion.
I hear that from both ends of the spectrum. There are always some who will want the Pope to change everything and make the Catholic Church more left wing (many of them become non-religious, or join the Episcopalian Church), and others that want to push the Catholic Church back to Pre-Vatican II era (more on that in a moment).
And then…
There are some people that claim to be Catholic who say that the Second Vatican Council wasn’t valid or that some other Council wasn’t valid, or that Popes after, say, Pius XII aren’t really Popes because they have done things or taught things that weren’t in accordance with prior Catholic teachings, and that as a result, there is no Pope because no “heretic” can be a legitimate Pope.
Those people are known as sedevacantists.
Mel Gibson is one of those people. I do NOT consider him to be an authentic Catholic, although I did enjoy his film “The Passion of the Christ.”
Those people probably would say “not my Pope,” or “there ain’t no Pope,” and I think they are preposterous for doing so.
Some of those sedevacantist groups have formed their own so-called “true” Catholic Churches.
Others that aren’t quite that extreme, but still often in defiance of the Second Vatican Council, such as Marcel Lefebrve’s Society of St. Pius X, have been excommunicated.
In the twenty-teens, the excommunication of the Society of St. Pius X was dropped, but they are still not fully integrated, it seems.
The even more radically traditionalist Society of St. Pius V is completely sedevacantist.
Hey listen. I’m fine with people doing the old Tridentine Latin Mass if the local Bishop permits it, but it should never be claimed that it is somehow more legitimate than other Catholic rites and liturgies, and I don’t recommend going back to it full time.
I had an Aunt and Uncle, now deceased, who were members of a parish in Atlanta that was allowed to use the Tridentine Mass full-time with the local Bishop’s permission. I attended it when I visited them in Georgia, and anytime they visited us in Houston, we would go downtown to the Cathedral where the Tridentine Mass in Latin was offered, just to accommodate them. I gotta be honest. It bores me to death, you can’t understand it, and it does little for me. Not a fan.
And in any event, attempts to portray the Second Vatican Council as illegitimate…make my BUTT TIRED.
And I can tell you this much. Many of these radical traditonalists/sedevacantists have a bit of anti-Semitic streak in them. We saw that with Mel Gibson and Archbishop Williamson, and to be honest, the only Holocaust denier that I ever personally met was one of those ultra-traditionalist types, so I steer clear of them.
I have to admit, I’ve had my issues with the catholic church since my teens.
However, the multiple stances by Francis on different topics definitely drew me back in a bit. Such a breath of fresh air and beautiful soul. He will be missed.
Awesome response, thanks

This right here.
Nah, they do like Martin Luther and become Protestants.
At the present moment, we can actually use the term without referring to heretics. I mean, with the Chair of St. Peter being vacant and all.
I suppose in a strictly technical sense, sure. But that word means something else altogether, as you and I both know.
My church is pretty conservative. There was plenty of grumbling about Francis
Sounds a lot like Our Lady of Walsingham Catholic Church congregation to me.
What’s your parish coach?
How so?
And in any event, how would you know what they would say?
Do you know any members of that congregation, and have you heard them say anything to that effect? I sure haven’t.
I’m not a member of that parish, though I attend occasionally.
In any event, the people that I know from that parish are quite loyal to the Pope and I’ve never heard any of them say “not my Pope” or anything to that effect, so I’m not sure where you are getting that idea that they would say such a thing like that from. And in any event, I’ve haven’t heard anyone say that in front of them, so I have no clue how they would react, and I doubt you would either.
And if you are saying that they would say that anyone who would say “not my Pope” is a “Bad Catholic,” I can’t say I’ve heard any of them say that either.
But that’s what I would say, for sure. I speak only for me.
They specifically left their church to splinter off into the Catholic Church because they didn’t agree/believe in what their church was evolving to, mainly accepting gays and women, which can be viewed like their Vatican 2. I can’t see past that.
Yeah, but they did so to come into communion with OUR church’s teaching on those topics.
How is that not a GOOD thing?
I mean, if they were defying church teaching and leaving the church, even in a sedevacanist way, that of course would be bad.
But if they are joining the church because they agree with our teachings and want to be loyal to the pope…how would that be a bad thing?
Not getting it.
They might say that the Anglican Archbishop “isn’t their bishop,” but they’d never say that they Pope “wasn’t their Pope.”
Why didn’t they leave earlier?
Because they had to wait for the Anglican teachings to go far enough out there to prompt a move.
They should have just left and converted like anyone else.
Think of it as the religious version of the American colonies.
Didn’t have this on my bingo card

R.I. P. to Pope Francis.
I have taken a few days to respond to this.
Many have called Pope Francis a reformist. At the same time the Vatican ignores the same evil that has plagued the Catholic Church for centuries.
Pope Francis wanted to make a difference?
Why did not you go after child molesters?
That should be the Pope next top priority. There are Cardinals in the highest positions that are child molesters. They are protected. They are protected by whom?
Recently it came to light that l’ Abbe Pierre was a child molester. He was regarded by everyone including the Vatican as a “future” saint. The truth came out after…his death.
The Pope, the Vatican knew what he did but never acted on it. Why is it that it took 17 years for this horrific crimes to come to light? They came to light after HIS DEATH.
How many priests, cardinals are child molesters? Granted this is not only for the Catholic church. It is happening for all religions or organizations tied to children education. Tomorrow I want a Pope that makes eradicating children molestations its primary goal. I want a pope that cleans the entire Catholic church. One rape is too many. I am Catholic but the Vatican for its lack of REAL action has proven that it would rather sweep rapes under the rug. Yes, sweep rapes under the rug then to make it a primary goal to extinguish it for good or try to. That HAS to be the next Pope primary goal. You call yourself a priest, a cardinal? Act and live your life like one.
50 years earlier my uncle was rapped by a priest. He was an alter boy. Shortly after he committed suicide. 50 years later my family still has not received an apology.
I am Catholic and went to Catholic school. Don’t tell me about a Pope with a vision.
