Memphis 2016 scored 48…this year 35(7 more on KO ret)…we lost both
SmU beat us 2016…this year we held to 22 points and won. We held USF to 24 points.
These are 18 to 22 year old young men…they make mistakes. Often because they want to do good, make a play. Thurman has nothing to do on this play but slant right on snap and outside rush…they want him to make a sack if he can…but from outside edge. He should have spun outside…would have kept contain. He got lost in moment.
Im pointing it out because many on here want to fire a coach every time we don’t get a first down or allow one.
I’m not asking for the coaches to do something they can’t physically do (grow a foot taller). But when you pay the type of money these coaches are getting you do expect better results. Either that or don’t pay them as much. With more money comes better results. Sadly we’re not in the position to sit and wait because the fan base as a whole is so apathetic.
Im gonna prove my point. The play in question…#91 Thurman keeping contain…Donofrio ran the same blitz in the 1st qtr…lets look at how it worked out…#91 was at RDE on this one also.

I guess he was coached? Our D coaches earned their paychecks CougarJim74. But in 3rd quarter on same exact call, he decided to spin inside. Do D lineman wear mikes in their helmets? Maybe a coach told him to do it.
Donofrio came back to same call that worked in 1st quarter and it would have worked again.
Again, when you have undisciplined play over and over again throughout the course of the year, it’s on the coaches to find someone to do it right if your best players can’t. That’s why they’re paid the big bucks.
I’m assuming you aren’t in management? Because if you are you’d realize that as a manager you take on the mistakes of your team.
Right, but unless you work for a crappy company, the manager is given a chance to rectify those issues, and they’re rarely fired based on a few weeks’ performance by the team that they inherited.
To answer your last question I think we had a distracted coaching staff whose head coach was actively involved in negotiations with both UT and LSU. Tim Brando stated as much the other day on the Josh Innes show (I know, Innes is an ahole and we shouldn’t listen to him but options are limited) when he said Herman was playing both ends against the middle and he lost the team mid way through the season. He said he knows for a fact this happened. Oh, and by the way, Renu Khator told my father in law last year that Herman had a verbal offer from UT of $5 mil/year prior to the navy game.
In the end, I don’t think it’s accurate to look at last years defense when Herman was on his way out and the players were distracted and had lost faith in the staff. 2015 would be more accurate.
So, when Thurman does it right he’s disciplined as well as being well coached. When he does it wrong, he’s well coached but undisciplined? Again, I think looking at a few selected screenshots of a few hand selected plays by a guy who obviously wants to place all the blame on the players and completely exonerate the coaches doesn’t allow one to fully realize what is going on. What was the defensive line call? Did Blum make the right call to go along with d’onofrio’s call? What’s happening in practice? Is there adequate amount of contact to allow for proper tackling (this was one of herman’s criticisms of Levine), etc. there is a lot that none of us that post on here know including myself but I know I am not going to find that out with a few selected screenshots of plays that help fit someone’s narrative.
Again, lets wait a few weeks and see what apple white thinks. If the defensive staff comes back intact then he obviously thinks it’s the players and not the coaches. If he starts firing coaches like Levine did (fired 5 of his 9 assistants after his first season) then he obviously thinks it’s the coaches.
For the record, I don’t think D onofrio is a terrible D.C. I think he is closer to average but I think his conservative style of play is better suited for a team that has tons of talent across the board which we clearly don’t except for d line. I’m more curious what apple white does with carrel after the season.
Hadn’t heard the $5M offer thing, but we had a pretty reputable poster pass along a conversation he had with a UT booster after the SMU game saying that Herman and his wife had spent the week up in Austin, meeting with boosters and shopping for potential houses so I wouldn’t be surprised if it was true.
(Edit) found the post and it was from @H-Town. I was a bit off on some of the details (this was after the Tulane game) but what he passed along came true.
Yep, there was also a report out of Baton Rouge that LSU began negotiating with Herman the week after Les Miles was fired. I believe Miles was fired after their fourth game.

Players don’t do same thing every play…game is played by football “players”.
You know the players real do have something to do with the outcome.
The players did well today against the triple option. They stayed within their assigned gaps for the most part. Didn’t get beat by play action (except for one pass), and strung the pitch plays out to the sidelines. Navy’s coaches also helped out, hardly calling any dive plays in the second half. They ran 15 dives, for 76 first half yards (good for 5 yards a pop). In the second half they ran FIVE dives, for 7 yards. Getting down by 10 in the fourth eliminated the dive, but why they went away from it in the third quarter when they had barely been stopped in the first half is still a mystery to me. Bad COACHING on Navy’s part. Good coaching on D’Onofrio and of course great play by our kids.
When Thurman does it right…it proves he can do it right and that he was coached.
When he does it wrong, he made a mistake, which players do.
Some of you want blame coaches for everything. They aren’t on the field. Have you ever coached sports? Not trying be jerk. If you have even coached your kids teams, you can realize how frustrating coaching can be. The best designed plays fail if players don’t perform.

Yes players have something to do with it. But I assume you think coaches do too. Otherwise we could save $2 million and have some peewee coach volumteer
That’s why they went away from the dive. I couldnt tell if we made any adjustments for that play but our whole defense seemed more intense in the 2ndhalf.
I was most surprised that navy did not pass more. We were fully committed to stopping their option.
Tulane killed us with their RPO last week.

I predicted 15-20 Navy passes. Glad I was wrong. More glad our defense shut them down in second half. I fact, we shut them down in 3 of the 4 quarters.
A lot of you guys are very concerned about how much coaches make? Do you pay them? You can pay them $100 million and players will still make mistakes. Pay them $30k and gonna make mistakes. Always have and always will
Urban Meyer makes 7million and his defense gave up 55 points to Iowa
Coaches run the program and therefore the buck stops with them. I think CMD has done a decent job considering he has a bad secondary but has a dominant defensive lineman in Oliver. Johnson is a bust and not worth his contract.
I was there for that Iowa game. The Hawks had a great evening against OSU but had one hell of a hangover afterward. They just came out of it tonight in Lincoln. That team is a frustrating squad to figure out.
Coogs are fine and the pains they’ve been experiencing this year are normal after a major staff change and the normalcies of losing players to graduation/draft.
Time to move on because there’s a bowl game to prepare for, Go Coogs!
