I think it’s worth considering — are you the person arguing that Texas A&M needs to go more co-ed and open? Because it sounds to me more like you’re looking backwards and insisting that Georgia Tech needs to be an all-white military academy because that’s what its predecessor southern engineering schools looked like.
No, I merely stating the fact that Texas A&M was an all white male fake military college and SOMEONE thought it would be wise to abandon their initial mission make it a more of a traditional co-ed type of university.
I’m drawing the parallels to the people supporting that move to the commuter school/non traditional student loving defenders here.
Come on dude
I hate A&M as much as anyone, but fake?
Come on now
you think the TAMU Cadets are an active unit of the US military, when compared to the cadets from ARMY or NAVY?
Come on…they are essentially military themed fraternities.
I’ve had friends in them, none of them were forced to serve so YES!..Fugazzi
For those concerned about certain students needing accessible education or whatever, UH Downtown exists and as I understand it is open enrollment. They have many great and applicable programs that can help kids get along in life. They also have very few greek organizations if someone doesn’t want to go to a school with a large Greek life. I’m not sure why there is pushback at all on the idea that UH should aim to be a traditional campus with all that that offers. Houston has zero of those universities and I think it would greatly benefit the city to have one.
I say fake because a large percentage of those in the aTm Corps of Cadets aren’t actively speaking a commission and have no plans to join the military.
In other words…at least 2/3 of them are there to dress like jackbooted brown shirts, march around, glorifying a quasi-military lifestyle…but NOT actually being military.
So yeah…FAKE.
At least service academy cadets are all planning to accept a commission upon graduation.
THAT’S “real.”
…because our leaders spent millions, if not a billion, to get us into the Power 4.
Traditional University elements are expected in schools in that group.
Our leaders know this however they are struggling due to some of our own alum’s resistance to evolve.
there are MANY newer commuter schools to take our place…let us evolve UP the ladder
So what do you have to say about kids in ROTC who don’t end up joining the military?
Fake?
Are you arguing that aTm is a military school? Feels like you’re just arguing to argue…
No im not saying A&M is a military school
I think A&M has a culture that is military themed or adjacent, but that doesn’t mean it’s fake
It’s just their tradition
I see what you’re saying, but have you never heard the term ‘fake army’ ?
Have you ever heard Soldiers or Marines refer to a particular branch of the military called the Chair Force?
Depends on their intent.
If they are in an ROTC “gentleman’s course” and are “contracted,” whether as a non-scholarship junior, or as a scholarship sophomore or above…then yeah, they have indicated that they intend to accept a commission.
That’s REAL.
If they can’t for medical reasons or an injury…I got it. Schitt happens!
But if they drop out or quit at that point…then they are going to pay back all the benefits that they have received as punishment for their lack of sincerity/commitment.
A POX on them!!!
That said…
Keep in mind that the aTm Corps, the VaTech Corps, VMI, the Citadel, North Georgia College, and Norwich University are all full-time quasi-military organizations.
In aTm’s case, many of those in that club are NOT intending to join the military.
FAKE.
Not sure what the rules at those others schools might be.
I’m not sure what point you’re making. I’m guessing that’s probably because air force doesn’t often serve in combat roles
My point is I think fake military is the improper label, nor do I think A&M considers themselves apart of the actual miiitaey
yeah idk about that
Right.
That’s a “fake” military.
Marching around, looking like a jackbooted brown shirt, doing military “cosplay,” but NOT actually being in the military/intending to join the military.
As I said…FAKE!
Agree to disagree
I don’t like aggies nonetheless
Isn’t is common knowledge that the Aggie Cadets are “Fake Military”
They just go around acting like they are military unit and require “their cadets” to dress and follow their rules…joining does NOT obligate you to do a tour in Afghanistan, or wherever…it’s for show only.
Now the Navy and Army cadets…those ARE real
And my argument is that you’re skating to where the puck is, rather than where it’s going.
Of the six public schools (GT, ASU, UCSC, UCR, USF, Utah) admitted to the AAU since 2010, four have Greek life participation rates at or below 10%. Zero play P2 football, and three of the six aren’t P4, either. Five of the six are in or immediately adjacent to the core of a major urban area*. Three of the six have higher Freshman acceptance rates than UH. Three of the six have less than 25% of their undergraduates living on-campus.
UH is what the future looks like. We’re doing great things. If your inferiority complex won’t let you see that, you should look inside yourself.
* - I have a rant locked and loaded about how Riverside shouldn’t count, but they do.
