Fiery. Driven. Chip on the shoulder and Texas/Louisiana-made. But no one’s racing to buy season tickets the day after Applewhite got the gig.

I spent some time with UH’s new man a couple days before Herman’s Takeover literally exploded and the Coogs claimed 13-1 and the Peach Bowl at the end of 2015. I still remember the light in Applewhite’s eyes as he passionately delivered these words:

“Amateur athletics? Give me a break. This is entertainment dollars. The only difference is these kids don’t get paid the way they should.”

“This business is not one to be jerked around with, with people with agendas and egos … and guys that are running out of town in the middle of the night to go take another job and leave you high and dry.”

“We have completely lost our frickin’ mind in these 18- to 22-year-old kids. And we’re not taking care of them the way that we say that we are - we’re just not.”

Now Applewhite, who could become the long-term answer the Coogs have longed for, must transfer that fire into wins.

Major Mistake? Snubbing Lane Kiffin Looks Like Small-Time Thinking By Houston

Hopefully, it wasn’t in this case. Hopefully, Applewhite’s deep ties to Texas is what truly won the day (only the people in the decision room will ever know definitively what’s true — and it’s in their self interest to publicly spin things Applewhite’s way now). Remember, Herman wasn’t ever offered the job at LSU officially either. Yeah right.

Asked about how the case factored into the University of Houston’s coaching search, athletics director Hunter Yurachek said in a statement: “In his tenure at the University of Houston Major Applewhite has demonstrated the utmost integrity and leadership and has served as a positive role model and influence for our student athletes.”

In other words, the bigness of Sept. 3 flared on occasion but couldn’t stick around for quite enough afternoons. Now Applewhite, the former Texas quarterback who, as a lad in Baton Rouge, once went to Tiger Stadium to witness the Houston of Antowain Smith scare LSU in a 35-34 cliffhanger, will see if he can keep the bigness flaring, and somehow even get it to stay.

Why Houston made the right choice by hiring Major Applewhite
Applewhite wasn’t the perfect fit. But he was the right one.

For one, his offenses have produced on the field. Remember, for all the credit Herman gets for the team’s success, Applewhite was the one actually calling the plays and was the architect behind an offense that averaged over 38 points per game this season and 40 the year before. He’s the guy whose offense topped 400 yards against Oklahoma in Week 1, and put up 38 points against Florida State in last year’s Peach Bowl. Herman’s fingerprints were obviously all over the game plan. But it was Applewhite pushing the buttons.
