Smith was recovering from injury all Spring and the only thing that Fritz could go by is last year’s game film. So here is the question…since Smith is starting game 2, Fritz must think that Smith gives UH the best chance to win.
Setting aside recency bias, that still makes me nervous, because I don’t think the OL can be fixed in one week.
Knowing the OL is a weakness it would make sense to roll the QB out so Smith isn’t standing in the pocket like a statue waiting to be sacked.
Hopefully the coaching staff makes adjustments… like getting the ball out quicker with short slants. Hit those talented TE’s by having them slip out for a short screen. Also, you have to mix up the play-calling with multiple RB looks if you want to run the ball. No way we’re gaining any yardage if we run a single RB straight into the LOS.
I actually think our offense will score at least a TD or few FGs if we clean up the penalties. Perhaps we get one with a big special teams play, too.
Defensively I think we hold them under 30 if we can put together a few long drives to chew up some clock. I like the play of our DBs and I think the D-line gets better and better the more they play together. Plus, guys that didn’t play well will no longer see significant minutes as Fritz weeds out who can play and who is a liability.
I’m not going to make a prediction on the score but I am going to throw this out there. In UH’s football history, UH has gone on the road and against all odds, when they were the underdogs, came out the victors. All it takes is discipline, passion, and fearlessness.
September 23, 1967 in East Lansing, MI. UH 37 - Michigan St. 7
November 6, 1976, in Austin, TX, UH 30 - UT 0
November 20, 1976, in Lubbock, TX, UH 27 - Texas Tech 19 (The winner of that game represented the SWC in the Cottom Bowl.)
This UH team has a chance to be added to those teams named above, and forever etch their place in UH history.
