Which side are you on today? Army-Navy game thread

Navy is the best team in the conference on the final day. I would rather them be playing Ped State than Memphis.

OMG!!!

Could this really be true???

Apparently, cadets/midshipmen were flashing ā€œwhite powerā€ hand signs at the game.

If this is true, then I sincerely hope that EXPULSIONS of the offending individuals occur. We sure as Hell don’t need to be commissioning garbage like that to lead our armed forces.

Truly DISGRACEFUL actions, if true.

It’s not for white power.

What is it then?

At best it’s the circle game, which fits with a lot of military culture being alternately extremely serious and extraordinarily juvenile, not having gotten it out of their systems in a normal school setting. I often didn’t feel like I fit in as an OCS guy.

At worst it’s the rising generation and it’s obsession with memes, owning people online, doing things for lulz, etc. It may knowingly be a white power thing, but not at all earnestly meant. They just wanted to see how big the reaction would be, and then laugh at people getting their panties in a twist.

I keep seeing this called a white power symbol. When exactly did this happen? I graduated high school in 2001 and we did this for the circle game. My wife posted an old high school picture on Facebook a few weeks ago and all her friends were doing it as well.

Since I graduated HS in 1990, maybe I’m out of it.

What’s a ā€œcircle game?ā€

Is that a generational thing or something?

Oh wait. I just looked it up.

Is there really such a STUPID game? How dumb.

Glad I missed out on that!

The doorknob game makes the circle game seem like 3D chess.

Hmmm…

That’s almost like having someone shoot the bird on TV and then having the shooter claim that what they really meant to say was ā€œwe’re number one!ā€

Uh…yeah…whatever. Good luck making that case!

Anyway, I’m an ROTC officer. I don’t understand the whole military academy thing, though I did get a Master’s degree at a military graduate school (US Army Command and General Staff College). Can’t imagine that making a gesture like that…if that is indeed what it is…would be tolerated in any respectable military or non-military setting.

If it is something else, then I’m guessing that a policy letter will soon come down from both Superintendents stating that whatever your motive or meaning may be…that hand gesture IS offensive,…and WILL be taken the wrong way…so DON’T make it.

I suspect the academies have always had problems dealing with discriminations and persecutions …

How long before blacks were allowed at both West Point or Annapolis … and even when they were allowed … how many survived those first years …

I am reminded of Hyman Rickover … the father of nuclear power in the Navy … a polish midshipman of jewish descent … stories of how he was treated his first year make the KKK look like choir boys …

It was said that he considered many of his peers from Annapolis dumber than door knobs … of course many went on to become his superiors … little wonder he didn’t get along with them and had to rely on Congress for protection to get his nuclear operations into working projects.

my wifes a gang officer for parole here, many groups like aryan brotherhood/KKK and such use hand signs like that just so they can say they dont mean what they actually do

The problem with Phantoms was that they were smokers and left a trail easily spotted. On the Forrestal, we had Phantoms, A4 Skyhawks, A6 Intruders, etc. For my money, the A4 Skyhawk was as good a fighter plane as ever built, even though it was subsonic, and it was so versatile. It was in service for 50 years!

If you saw ā€œTop Gunā€ with Tom Cruise, the A4 was the single engine plane the instructor flew.

BTW, to answer original question, I pulled for Navy as I have always in the Army - Navy game.

Great game by Navy and I really enjoyed the pregame ceremonies, especially the two corps singing the national anthem together. Also a great standing ovation for the Commander in Chief…

Great game as always. I was cheering for Army but Navy came to play.

Group Founder went to then left AFA

Brother of his went to AWP

Former football player from Navy played here

Go Navy, Beat Army

Deftly skating around the politics and foolishness to mention the unis were terrific, again. Not quite 2013 level, but close. I’m pretty old school and tend to like classic, simple unis but the one-upmanship that comes out in this game makes for great looking contests. Here’s my favorite year, 2013

Gang,

After investigating the matter, it appears that the ā€œOKā€ hand gesture was, as jtdees said, just a moronic game, and not a racist thing.

That’s a relief, but, that said, I would hope that our nation’s cadets would have a bit more maturity than that!

That hand gesture is often used by basketball players after sinking a 3 pointer. I’m pretty sure that Davis, Gray, Armoni, Grimes, Hinton, Deeky, and players on other teams are not white power racists. I never even knew that was considered a racist gesture by white supremists; but not being one, and not looking for every opportunity to claim racism, why should I?

I also root for all AAC teams unless they are playing us, so go Navy as long as we are in the same league.
