Mack was the last guy who was close to dynamic. Since then Hunter, Pez and Eddie. All have been milquetoast generic middle manager types. Zero personality or ability to rally the troops. It’s like we go out of our way to hire the most unispiring candidates possible.
At least Eddie can fundraise.
Hes also active and speaks about all the issues. Thats more than the last AD
The AD position at UH is one of if not the toughest in all of the P4 athletics world, and so it takes a special kind of person to succeed here. That person has to be an exceptional politician, an accomplished fund raiser, an exceptional leader as well as excellent administrator to start…
That’s great. But hire some fundraisers to do that.
I wouldn’t be opposed to Nunez leaving. Yes, its personal
That’s part of the job of being AD… pezman had UH running the lowest P4 budget in the country.
Pezman couldn’t get in front of a camera, or speak out on social media to save his life.
Eddie actually acknowledges and responds to deserved criticism. Pezman was a mute in those same situations.
Eddie’s been solid so far. I’d like him to put more effort in getting fans to come to games.
Houston has no fans
What is the job of an AD? Is it to be a front man or is to be an effective manager? Big picture or the details?
I think Eddie is good at the big picture, but the details are sometimes falling through the cracks. I’m not sure he’s always being well served by his staff.
Kelvin Sampson is the rare person in sports that is a good CEO and good at the details, good at the front man stuff and the big picture. But he does it in a silo and doesn’t have to worry about an entire department.
Does he make changes, or does he go full politician and just move on after talking about things?
I’m not hating on him, but I haven’t seen much action to follow the talk. Maybe there’s stuff happening behind the scenes that pays dividends later - hope so.
I’d like an AD who seems excited to be here. And can fire up the fan base whe he or she has a both his revenue programs ranked.
I remember everyone liked Maggard and he hired good coaches. His downfall was the stadium. He thought renovating Robertson was a better idea than building a new stadium. He wasn’t here very long after Khator became President. I’ve always heard they wern’t the best of friends.
I would have taken a shot with Uncle Greg.
NFL player.
Forner SWC player
Earned a Law degree after the NFL
Huge personality
AND
He would talk about wanting to work for UH all the time over the air but nobody every contacted him.
If not a Greg Koch type…the a Jeff Luhnow tupe to Money Ball the crap out of the NIL era.
You can’t fix the problems this athletic department has overnight. He’s only been here for a little over a year. Give it time.
It’s my best guess that Eddie and the entire front ticket office didn’t sound the alarm bells about our season ticket sales this off-season because we were coming off of back to back 4-8 seasons, have had a number of recent coaching changes, and didn’t want to spread bad press about attendance and planned to work hard to rebuild the fan base slowly.
Fast forward to today, Houston surprisingly comes home with a 7-1 red hot team playing at 11am on Halloween Weekend and the front office starts scrambling early in the week trying to throw a Hail Mary on selling 20k+ walk up tickets. Didn’t happen
You realize the point of the book Moneyball was the Oakland project to use stats to find players without just spending a huge pile of cash like the Yankees and Dodgers, right? Like they knew they didn’t have money and couldn’t just throw money at the problem?
You should reread the book, if you even did.
Yes…I’ve read the book way before it was a movie.
I’ve also been a huge baseball fan since age 3
Money ball is perfect for this new NIL/ Transfer era.
We literally are building rosters from the stats of players that played for a different college the year before with limited NIL $$$
You need to identify diamonds in the rough
We have not had a good AD since Dave Maggard left. However his downfall was that he could not work with Khator. Her only strike in my opinion.
Great AD. Kicked arse. Even guided the conference better than the commish at the time iirc.
