The Cougars will welcome two transfers and one incoming freshman to campus for the upcoming season. Amy Nguyen comes to Houston after spending the last two seasons with 2017 Big-12 Champion Oklahoma State, appearing in eight matches and earning Academic All-Big 12 First Team honors. The Houston native attended Memorial High School where she earned Second Team All-District honors in 2013 and District MVP honors in 2014. Nguyen was a starter for the Challenge SC from 2010-16 earning All-Tournament Team honors at the Phoenix ECNL and Arizona ECNL events.

“We are very excited to have Amy come home to Houston,” said Bocanegra. “Amy brings a level of maturity, having won the Big 12 regular-season title and played in the NCAA Tournament last year. She will be an added weapon in our attack and has the opportunity to make an immediate impact.”

Goalkeeper Samantha Cude will come to Houston after spending two seasons at Angelo State. Cude appeared in 38 matches, making 37 starts and was a mainstay in goal for Angelo State where she led the team with 59 saves her freshman season and 89 saves her sophomore season. Over the past two seasons Cude has posted 13 shutouts, earning Lonestar Conference Honorable Mention honors in 2016, Goalkeeper of the Year in 2017 and First Team All-Conference honors in 2017. Cude attended Capostrano Unified School District where she earned First Team All-League and Second Team All-League accolades during her four-year career, appearing in the CIF playoffs twice and Regionals once.

“Sammy is a tremendous addition to our goalkeeping group,” said Bocanegra. “In a position where experience is paramount, she comes to us with 38 college games under her belt. Even though she has already earned several individual accolades, we believe she has the potential to reach another level.”

Houston native Rachel Garant comes to Houston from Cy-Ridge High School. The forward posted 28 goals last season to go along with nine assists, setting a program-record for single-season goals at both Cy-Ridge and the District. Garant is a four-time Academic All-District honoree, two-time First Team All-District honoree and two-time team MVP. The dual sport athlete was also a member of the Cy-Ridge volleyball team.

“Rachel is the final addition to our 2018 squad,” said Bocanegra. “We first noticed Rachel in February, playing for her Houston Dash Development Academy team. Within minutes we saw an explosive, aggressive, relentless attacker who had the ability to score goals and create scoring chances for her teammates. Rachel has a huge upside potential and she will add depth to our front line.”
