Big 12 Football: 5 best current candidates for conference expansion

They could be in AAC and we would outnumber everyone, if it stuck together…

Money aint everything. I would suspect that the PAC12 will make a move. I would rather be somewhere that appreciates and respects us.

Tell that to the UH athletics department. Being in the B12, UH will have a larger conference payout and will make more money on home games because most of them will be sellouts because the visiting teams are close enough to come and fill out the stadium.

I like the PAC12 if offered but not too many PAC12 fans are going to travel 1000+ miles to a game and vice versa.

I think UT and OU are going to consider their options. I’ve said numerous times that them leaving is far from certain since there are serious disincentives to leaving the Big 12.

Don’t know about Texas bring regional. Their TV ratings are actually higher than OUs. But your point about them tanking and OU having to carry the conference in football is valid. However, that also shows why OUs path to the playoffs is easiest as a Big 12 member.

American > Little 12 any day of the week. This conference keeps improving every year and hopefully can negotiate another TV contract in the near future with more money, NBC/ABC/CBS?

I agree that we’re getting very good but our TV contract starts next year and is for 10 years. ESPN is getting a bargain with the AAC no doubt. During that time ESPN will literally take ad revenue from games like SMU-Memphis primetime and “redistribute” it to 8 schools in the B12 who can’t sniff primetime without playing the Big 2.

Bingo. The future of college football is the playoff which, in my opinion, throws a bucket of cold water on any fire the OU administration has of leaving the Big 12.

Unless they loose to a subpar B12 team and UT is down. They have no chance at the playoff, while 1 loss teams in the SEC and B10 are still feasibly in the running. IMO the narrative that UT and OU will be happy in the B12 because it is the easiest path for them to the playoff is not necessarily true with a loss.

edit: I should say it is not a guarantee to the playoffs for those schools. There could be feasibly two SEC or B10 teams in the playoff. The strength of the conference is the key. Having a conference full of doormats besides those two does not help their chances

ACC and Pac faces the same problems them. Clemson is to the ACC what OU is to Big 12. Last year the the Big 10 and Pac got left out. This year it seems B12 and Pac are likely to be left out. Unless OU misses the playoffs multiple times, I don’t think they will be keen to change conferences.

Here we go again the uta trolls are out of the garbage can.
Too many mouths to feed?
The real and only reason why the SWC ceased to exist is due to uta wanting to control the piggy bank.
We all know what is going on with the PUF scam. uta & atm took the same position and applied it to the re-branded SWC. This time around they called it the small12. They had to find some dancing and robbing partners to play along. Okie and okidokie were too good to pass up. Oh wait, let’s add the uta porn channel.
Here you have it friends and it ain’t fake news.

Big 12 expansion talk occurs when the AAC is doing well to divert attention.

This fuse is lit my friends, and it has been lit for months, and the smoke filled back rooms are all positioning themselves to make moves, based on other moves, based on other moves…
Who will blink first ???
My hope and vote would be Pac12 (unless my dreamboat Big10 calls…).
Go Coogs !!!

What the heck are you babbling about? UT controlled the SWC piggy bank. What they wanted was a bigger piggy bank. The Big 12 offered them a far bigger one than SWC did or ever could, so they split. How is this an apology for UT? It’s how things were at that point in time. The SWC was simply losing out on exposure and money. It was a simply unsustainable relative to its peers. Fan interest was declining, the half empty stadiums were proof of that.

Read this (written in 1974!). SWC weaknesses were apparent even then! The Decline and Fall of the Southwest Conference – Texas Monthly.

Call it finances, call it greed, call it whatever. Don’t tell me that given the opportunity UH wouldn’t have done the same. It’s just the nature of the beast. We hate those that did it, but would gladly do it ourselves if we could.

Why UT supported TT and Baylor over UH and SMU is the point. It is said that Big 8 wanted a total merger with the SWC, while Texas only wanted 4 SWC members to join the Big 12. If UH had the kind of political support BU and TT had at the time, maybe things would have turned out differently.

Things have changed a lot since them. UH has made a lot investments not only in the university but also cultivating and growing its political support. That will pay dividends eventually.

I hope it pays dividends eventually!

I fear we may have missed the boat in 2011 (TCU) and 2016 (farce). Just not sure how many lifeboats are left.

Everyone is in a waiting game until Texas/OU either sign/don’t sign a new XII GOR.

Keep going with your uta propaganda. Here is the author to your ode to uta.

Not only is he clearly biased but his CV/resume explains why uta and rice are joined and have been joined at the hip for decades.
He breaths, sleeps, eats and spits uta. Go ahead challenge that one too.
uta losing money? uta financing other Schools? Why do you care? uta prints money thanks to the PUF. Declining attendance? So what about now? Is uta going to create its own conference maybe?
Yes I did read the entire uta/pravda (please check what the Pravda was all about)

Not once did he mention the PUF and the implications (sports programs & others) that it had on the uta’s and atm’s development at the detriment of every other Texas public Schools. Without scamming to control/keep controlling the PUF money uta would have never developed the way it has. With the PUF scam the uta cartel has mostly (atm gets 30%) castrated the development of other Texas Schools. Here comes the University of Houston. All hell breaks lose. uta & atm now have to stop U of H every which way they can. You did agree right that uta fomented with the ncaa to specifically target U of H? Go ahead try to deny that one too.
The small 12 would have everything to gain getting U of H in. uta knows it and wants none of it. Why you do not want us in the small 12? Because you can’t control us and you are afraid of our humongous potential. Furthermore it would be a lot harder today to have the ncaa crucify us. Have a nice day uta.

It really sounds like you have fallen into the deep end of the pool.

Yes, tied at the hip which is why rice is in whatever conference they are in and not the big 12 over TCU.

Such as? What does the big 12 gain?

Don’t worry I have a nice pool and yes it does have a deep end (love it)
Rice could care less about athletics. Case in point? What is their record for the last few seasons (just checking)
You want us to believe that the third supported School in the State with the soon to be third biggest City in America could not be a major jolt to the small 12 conference? Are you telling us there would crickets in the stands and nobody watching? Seriously do you expect us to believe this?
