He’s UT grad. It takes two to tango, he always wanted to end up at UT, no matter how he was doing at Tech. Very similar to Herman, he took a job that gave him clear path to job he desired.

Plus Beard also got his Masters degree from Abilene Christian n UT needed someone to learn the in/out of their biggest rivalry in Basketball.

I suspect Tech will look at successful mid-major coaches first, as they’d likely want someone with proven head coach experience. If I’m them, I go all in on Porter Moser. Grant McCasland is also an intriguing option.
Why didn’t he interview in the middle of the season and cause a huge distraction and then leave right before the tournament?

thinking about it, techs only option might be to hire an assistant, they have a great roster for next year…with the portal there only real chance at keeping it together is with an assistant
