Ward earned it by practicing and being part of the team as well as being “the” scout guy on several occassions. You are not earning that kind of practice squad cash and not being part of the team.
You are 100% correct. You can be sure that Greg worked his tail off. His work ethic has always been exceptional. It is awesome to see him rewarded for it. I expect him to make the squad next year.
