Harlem Globetrotters’ President Howard Smith announced today that the franchise will retire jersey No. 41 in honor of legendary player, showman, and current head coach, Sweet Lou Dunbar when the team plays at Dunbar’s alma mater, the University of Houston, on February 15 at the Fertitta Center.
Dunbar, who currently serves as the team’s director of player personnel and head coach, is in his 42nd season with the Globetrotters. He is one of the most popular showmen in franchise history, having traveled around the world the equivalent of three times while entertaining more than 10 million fans on six continents as a player and millions more as a coach.
A native of Minden, La., Dunbar is just the eighth player in the team’s 93-year history to have his number retired, joining Wilt Chamberlain (13), Marques Haynes (20), Curly Neal (22), Tex Harrison (34), Geese Ausbie (35), Meadowlark Lemon (36) and Goose Tatum (50).
Sweet Lou…6’9" PG with outstanding ball handling skills and court awareness. Magic Johnson was a special 6’9" PG, but Sweet Lou was the first “giant” PG in the early seventies. One of my all-time favorite Coogs.
OT - Geese Ausbie and Meadowlark Lemon are my all-time favorite Globetrotters. Geese Ausbie could entertain anyone and everyone. He had natural charisma and he made all children smile. He was just a loveable guy. No one, and I mean no one, could sink a half court hook shot like Meadowlark Lemon. It went in the hoop more often than not.

Use code save35 and save 35%. I think it is awesome we have had ties to the Globetrotters like that with Sweet Lou. Might not get the prestige of the NBA but damn well a big deal to me.
So, with the Globies retiring the jersey at the Fertitta Center, should they paint one on the wall next to the ones retired by UH? (In Globetrotter colors)
Will call was a cluster. I bought tickets last minute online and only option was will call. Got in line 6:45, walked in at 7:30 tip. Lots of angry folks. UH ticket office looked bad to a lot of non-UH people.
