Wilson entered the newspaper business by purchasing a Jasper paper. He later served on newspaper staffs in Beaumont, Waco and San Antonio before joining the Chronicle to cover University of Houston athletics.
He covered the Astros into the 1970s and later became a sports columnist. Wilson was considered by most to be a journalist who was hard-hitting but always fair.
