Sanders Cup - Game 1 in Sugarland (L 5-4)

Just no explanation for it. He’s been a top notch player at every level he’s played and did well in the fall. For some reason, it just hasn’t clicked for him this year.

SHSU is really good at hitting and running; punched a number of balls through the right side with the runner going. Really well coached.

Ball game, SHSU wins 5-4

Too many mistakes in the first 7 innings, couldn’t make up for it. 0-3 in mid-week games since the Romero suspension.

Tulane at home this weekend. Need a big series.

And the Cougars found different ways to dig a hole. Back-to- back fielding errors led to two runs in the first inning. A misplay of a ball in the left-field corner pushed across another. There was the miscommunication on an infield hit with nobody covering first, and the Sam Houston State runner caught in a rundown that slid safely back into second. UH even had a base runner thrown out at first base for tagging up early.

Freshman starter Brayson Hurdsman, in just his second career start, didn’t allow an earned run, but surrendered five hits and one walk with two strikeouts in 4.0 innings of work.

Nolan Bond took over in the fifth inning, but would allow two run on five hits with one walk and one strikeout. After a leadoff base runner in the sixth, Aaron Fletcher took over and tossed 2.0 shutout innings, allowing just one hit and one walk.

Freshman Carter Henry entered the eighth and tossed 1.1 innings, allowing one hit with two walks.

Fellow freshman Tyler Bielamowicz came in and shut the door, retiring the two hitters he faced in the ninth.

This team’s baseball IQ is lacking. Too many mistakes for this late in the season, much less after playing baseball most of their lives.

It’s a little frustrating to watch them make so many mental mistakes. I’d chalk it up to youth, but the mistakes were mostly from upperclassmen last night.

On the other hand, SHSU was very well coached and executed time and time again. Why they were able to win.

This was probably the worst game I’ve seen in terms of defensive and other mental miscues. I also did not like starting Fuentes and Monacy. Neither guy has proven they have the chops to be in the line-up or the field, even with lots of guys out.

Time to accept our 2 or maybe even 3 seed. Maybe one year we’ll learn to not take weekdays off.
